Happy 68th birthday to one time record signing Irving Nattrass

Who signed for the mighty Boro from Newcastle in July 1979

Newcastle were relegated in 79 & Nattrass wanted to stay in the top flight, hr joined the Boro, but with both clubs unable to come to a figure it went to an independent tribunal who fixed the tranfer fee at £475k, a club record
His, debut was a good while after signing due to an achilles tendon injury, unfortunately his time at the Boro was stop & start with season 83-84 been the only time in his time at the Boro, probably his career, he played every minute of every game league, league Cup & FAC Cup games, in total 47 games in one season
In 6 seasons he clocked up 220 games, scoring 2 goals & played in 9 different positions
I liked IN, thought he was a classy CB, nowhere near as good as Willie Maddren but I thought what a cracking signing John Neal had made, in a good, exciting team who score goals, now sorting out the defence, but it wasn't to be, as mentioned, his career was stop start & played all over didn't give him a specific role at the club

In his 1st season 79-80 he wore shirt numbers, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 & 12 & TBH that's how it continued

His 1st of 2 goals was a 3-0 home win over Leeds 1st home game of the season & 1982-83 a penalty at home to QPR in a 2-1, big Mals 1st game as manager

In fact throughout his time at the Boro he also wore No's 2, 5, 7, meaning No's 1 & 11 were only ones he didn't play with on his shirt

Brian Orritt in the 60's played in every position apart from RB & wore every number apart from No2, IIRC

I remember being on a sparsely populated Holgate End with Nattrass in the team when this very old timer stood just in front turned to me half way through the second half and told me what a complete waste of a career it was for a player of his class and quality to be playing in the Boro side of that time.

The old fella was completely right of course, Nattrass was a class above although he did have his injury problems.

His nickname was Mattress but that was an unkind era in the Holgate, the young Mogga was called Tony No Brain.
