Handicapping in football

Just had a brainwave. Start teams in receipt of parachute payments on minus points. Parachute payments are to ensure that teams don't go bankrupt due to the severe drop in income but have gradually chipped away at the competitiveness of the league.
This will restore the competitiveness of the league whilst ensuring teams don't go out of business.

It will happen imo.

FIFA taking their lead from American sports with this ridiculous tournament this summer. There’s a power struggle between FIFA and the various federations, at ome point there’ll be a split and clubs will have to decide which way to go.

Imo there’ll be a series of closed shop competitions across the globe that will feed into the annual equivalent of the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup etc

Players won’t care as they’ll make more money, younger fans won’t care as they’d rather see Liverpool vs Bayern than Liverpool vs Ipswich, owners will be happy as they’ll be able to coin it in.

Within 10 years it will happen. Fans are powerless to stop it.

They stopped the superleague. Fans of teams like Chelsea and Utd seem more keen to play in the premier league than fans of other teams are to keep them in the premier league. I'd rather they ****ed off.

First time they did, it’s the older fans imo that would be unhappy. Anyone thinking the idea has gone away is deluded.

The even better news, F***ing Wrexham will be in it.

Agree but it's probably more the "real" fans who actually go to games who feel like that.

They're vastly outnumbered by the "fans" in Africa/Asia who probably couldn't give a feck about domestic competitions.

I've never heard it suggested before but it would certainly level the playing field. A 12 point deduction would seem about right in your first season of parachute payments. Then 8 and 4 in years 2 & 3 (I think it is 3 years now).

The teams that come down have wage bills that double, treble or quadruple other Championship clubs. If they can't win 4 more games than non parachute clubs then they don't deserve to be promoted.

I like the idea.

I think for every £1m you spend on wages you should lose a point. If Boro spend £30m a year on wages then we start on -30 points. If Man United spend £350m a year on wages then they start on -350 points.
