Haigh resigns

It seems a very trivial issue over which to resign. I wonder if there is more to come on this.

I don't know anything, I'm just speculating.

I felt the same, seemed a simple mistake.

However the report in the original post claims that 'sources' said she made the false report to obtain a newer phone that was been issued in her work place.
The same sources claim she lost her job because of it.

It’s right that she has stepped down as it’s likely she lied to the police and her employer even if it was just to be issued a better work phone. She chose not to hand the old phone in after ‘finding’ it so the question is what was she planning to do with it when she turned it back on later.

Most of us were calling for Steve Turner to resign when his prior criminal activity was made public. It would be a bit hypocritical not to hold an MP accountable in the same way.

My thoughts exactly. Is it an offence to think you have lost a mobile and then find it later? Was she actually mugged? I’ve read contradictory reports on this. The police would not have prosecuted unless there was intent. Something isn’t right here.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Old poster here Starmer is not a socialist, he abandoned his principles many years ago.

I hate what he has done to the labour movement.

May he rot.

Unfortunately I can't see a Labour Party that reflects my and probably many of your principles every being voted in to govern this country in the remainder of my lifetime.

If she's found the phone, turned it on and not informed her employer then it's only logical that they would report it to the police on the assumption that it was the thief doing it.
Sounds to me like it's an error of judgement and she's paid for that error by getting a criminal record, losing her job at the time and now her position in the cabinet.
Not sure what people want to happen now because it all seems done and dusted to me.

She pleaded guilty to a recordable criminal offence, so it’s not exactly rocket science to work out why she had a criminal record.

The point that it is spent is a more valid one. We have clear rules in principle surrounding criminal activity and disqualification or recall as an MP and serving as a minister. But to some extent, it was Labour during the last parliament that led the race to the moral high ground in suggesting that such rules should not be followed and that people should resign anyway so there’s an element of hoist by your own petard about this.
My point about the criminal record was more that this even got to court if as she claimed. I understand if she pleads guilty she has a criminal record. Probably didn’t explain myself when posting earlier.
