It was a song about a chancer from South Shields called John Kirkpatrick. Not a very accurate account of what went on, although the guy did exist and take part in the horror of Gallipoli. The song says he is depicted in a statue on South Shields sea front. Artistic licence - its in front of Morrisons in town. His exploits got mixed up with a New Zealand stretcher bearer who was responsible for the bulk of the 300 retrievals from the heights. The Aussie Government thought that the guys who operated on the open beaches were more deserving of medals. However you look at it, the campaign was a huge waste of life on both sides.Wasn't the main character awarded a purple heart, the only pacifist to ever earn the award?
In other news, there is a donkey from the first world war that was used with it's handler to bring injured soldiers from the battlefield. When it's handler was killed the donkey carried on doing its job and it was awarded a medal, as I recall. The Donkey was called Duffy, although there were several and Duffy's medic, John Simpson (I think) and Duffy are memorialized somewhere in Durham in a statue, I believe, though I have never seen it.
All my information comes from a folk song written by Martin Simpson (just looked this up, Jackie and Murphy, so maybe parts of my recount are wrong).
In any event here is the song that I was remembering from:
My understanding, admittedly only from Martin Simpson, was that John Simpson and Kirkpatrick were the same guy. Kirkpatrick changed his name when he jumped ship in New Zealand to avoid being arrested. It was a song about a chancer from South Shields called John Kirkpatrick.
