Hackney’s ‘Goal’

Can't tell from either of those photos. You can't tell from the south stand, you have the wrong angle. The only view to judge would be from the west or east stand in line with the bye line or close to it.
You may not have the best angle but you can make a reasonable assessment in real time by judging the speed of the ball with the timing of the foot making contact with it. A still picture doesn’t help much unless it’s showing the exact moment the ball is furthest forward on impact with the foot.

That's exactly what that photograph is showing though.

We had the same thing with the World Cup with people adamant that the ball was out even after seeing bird's eye view footage directly above the ball showing that it wasn't.

Which of these looks more out?

I don’t think that does show the ball at its furthest point. The cut back means Crooks’ foot would be further around the back of the ball and there is the depression of the ball as it hits the foot to consider too.

We have goal-line technology for the actual goal so why not have the technology for all of the goal and bylines? Seems logical.

The expense.

Goal line technology is expensive, and that's when the area it's covering is only 7m wide.

It would cost a great deal more to cover two 105m lengths and two 68m lengths.

I was in the direct in line , I did not feel that the whole of the ball of the curvature of the ball was definitely over the whole of the line , but it was so tight , I can understand why the Lino flagged .

Our eyes are notoriously unreliable with detail, subject o our own prejudices, light and weather conditions, visual impairment, and various tricks our eyes and minds play on us in real time and at the micro level needed to correctly call this.

A still is certainly better than our own memory of the event, but multiple stills are required to truly get the correct answer.

This situation was clearly very close. Personally I don't understand why we don't have hawkeye technology across all four boundary lines of the field of play to take the human factor and uesswork out of this.

It was on the ground and there was a gap. It was the most out ball that has ever been out - ask anyone in the West stand. I am not going to post more on this thread after this as it is daft now.
in the image ion this thread the ball is on the ground and in, now it might have bounced up from and gone out, but I've yet to see any visual evidence of this.

I watched it online, there was no conclusive footage, it looked out in real time but then they tried to show it with better footage and you couldn't tell, I still thought it was out, then the last footage which they only showed once and didn't really slow down may have had the balls circumference still partly over the top of the line, if there is clearer footage it didn't get shown.

My seat on Saturday was bang in line with the touchline and goal posts in the west lower and i can tell you it was comfortably out.

It clearly wasn't "comfortably" out was it? Whether you think the decision was correct or not, the video clearly shows it was very close one way or the other.

In real time our eyes deceive us, on replay it’s clearly very tight and inconclusive

He had a better view than you have seen. The crowd behind the line hardly "go up" so I reckon that they could see it was out.

I was in the SW corner and it looked out to me just on the timing of when Crooks made contact with the ball it would have rolled out (I didn't have a clear view of the ball as I'm behind the line)

Talking of fine margins. Has everyone seen the margin by which USA went out of the Women's WC?

USA keeper gets her hand to it but it spins over the line by that much.

Agree with all this Mart. Mad to think people are arguing for ball speed calculations they apparently made on the spot over and above photograph and video evidence.
