Grounds for optimism?

After yesterday's disappointing performance it's important to look for positives.

Our football can be good/productive.
How else can you explain wins over Chelsea, Southampton and the double over Leicester?

We are well placed regarding FFP - plenty of headroom if Gibson is still ambitious.

The Club seems to be willing to spend? After all it was reported we were looking to sign Tom Cannon for £7.5m (before being gazimped by Leicester who picked him up as cover.....their 4th choice striker 😡). Maybe the market has not thrown up the right opportunities. Have a read through other Club forums and many are bemoaning (more than usual) lack of arrivals.

It SHOULD be an easier League next year.

Carrick will have had more management experience to build on.

Any more???

I’m positive and optimistic probably 95% of the time, we are giving it a go, is it working? Not really but next season we will give it another go.

We will get it right but it may take a few seasons, our fans have always struggled with patience but I’m afraid that’s what we need to be.

We WILL get there.

Was good to see Latte Lath back and Isaiah Jones is only 2 weeks away. Having Coburn back would make a real difference.
Little glimmers... thankfully we are away next week.

All joking aside about the summer war chest, I do think we will back Carrick in the summer and sign 3 or 4 players of quality.

I expect a summer spend of £15m+

Which one of them is going in goal, or playing as a DCM and protecting our horrendous defence, or playing as a fullback who can support the attack and actually defend?

Just been thinking about this while I was doing the ironing. Quite a few positives. He knows now that Dieng has got to come back in and Glover is not good enough. Ayling goes at the end of his loan, if not before, as does Thomas. Barlaser is too slow and a squad player for a promotion chasing team, at best. McGree needs to be utilised properly, on the left. Latte Lath runs a lot but doesn’t produce much, neither does Greenwood.

As for the rest of them. Keep Smith as back up right back, a good leader. Lenihan, Clarke, Fry and VDB are good enough, unless there is an opportunity to improve on any of them. It’s VDB plus one other, probably Lenihan. Engel and Bangura, good squad players. I would be surprised if Hackney goes. Jones, Forss, good players to be in and around a promotion team. Azaz and Silvera are options off the bench.

Why not get the lads back together? China, Archer and Giles have had poor seasons after having the best season of their careers with us last season. They know how we work, we have improved a couple of positions, VDB and Dieng.

That leaves a couple more to come in, right back, centre mid x2 and another forward player.

Things are looking up if you ask me and I can see us pushing next season, or smashing the league with the correct ambition.

How can you say that given zero investment up top in Jan
I think long term it's possibly the right plan. The value of replacement wasn't there in January, other than the lad on loan to Hull. Hull are going for it, will FPL bite next season.

I'm hoping for a good summer and was contending at the right end of the division next season.

I have bemoaned our transfer policy for years, it would be churlish to moan when we try to do things a bit differently when it doesn't succeed immediately.

We lost £50 odd million worth of players at the end of last season, always a difficult position esp when Leeds, Leicester and Southampton are strong squads for the division.

Hopefully with another season under his belt and a summer to reflect Carrick realises he has to mix it up a bit and that playing out from the back is not the only option - or gets players more comfortable doing it.

A striker or two, combative midfielder and work on the full backs and we wouldn't be too far from a good squad. The work done of the last couple of seasons puts us in a position to address this. Over to you SG and the recruitment team.

I'll have a pint of what you're drinking.
Chuba, Archer and Giles are further beyond our finances now than they were last summer when we actually owned one of them.
