Ground broken at former steelworks for 'world-leading' Net Zero Teesside Power project

I wouldn't get too excited yet.

The remediation and infrastructure work currently underway is being funded by Teesworks Ltd’s joint venture partners i.e. us

A final investment decision will not be taken by NZT Power partners until 2024.

Ah, it's CO2 capture and storage. Breaking ground to build a gas power plant with no CO2 capture or storage infrastructure in place and none on the horizon.

Unicorn farts.

By then they will have probably gone bust and the Tories will be out of power. Nothing to see here, just more false promises.

Just Houchen re-announcing stuff he announced in April- you know just before the local elections.

It'll be re-announced again next April, when his and his mate, Turner's re-election is in May.

We won't really know if it's happening until the end of next year.

There is nothing to suggest that the CO2 capture and storage scheme isn't going ahead. I don't know how long people imagine this will take but is is an absolutely huge job and the work is going on right now. Just don't expect to see anything above ground for a while yet.

On a slightly related subject, there looks like there has been increased action coming from MGT. Turbine must have been fired up a few times recently. Can see the steam bellowing out from my office. Is this plant any closer to coming online? I know they've had problems with fire suppression system, explosions in the boiler and also the switch room. Hopefully all these issues have now been resolved and they can get it online.

Its slow going as the government have to sign off on every stage and reviewing instead of letting the big hitters plough on

It isn't just that, it's that it is such a massive project. We are talking about capturing nearly all of the CO2 from the industries of Teesside and Humberside and pumping it miles offshore to safe storage. Eventually most of the petrochemical sites on these two rivers will need structural alterations, there will be Above Ground Installations to plan and build, whose land they will be on and who will supply the energy to run them and all kinds of other problems to solve. At the moment they are only just planning the pipeline routes in Teesside area.

Sunak will soon put paid to it.

It will be on the basis they could not get any forward contracts, it’s a lot cheaper to let that carbon disappear into the air.

It's a scam to allow fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions to continue unabated while pretending to do something. Efficient cost effective technology doesn't exist at scale. It will still be about to happen in 20 years.

Well its not unabated is it. That's the whole point.
