Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston joined Thirteen's director of strategic partnerships to mark the start on-site at Gresham in Middlesbrough.

Work started back in March, but due to Covid restrictions, the official ceremony to celebrate this fantastic milestone has waited until now.

The scheme, known as ‘Union Village ', signifies the union of the old development with the new, is being delivered by Thirteen and will focus on land between Diamond Road and Union Street.

The development will see the delivery and build of new, affordable and much-needed homes, which form ambitious plans to regenerate part of central Middlesbrough by bringing derelict land back to life.

The first phase will start with the delivery of 145 homes, with phase two planned for 2022, adding a further 77 homes to the housing scheme.

The new high-quality homes will all be for affordable rent and include two to four-bedroom homes with a mix of houses, apartments, and bungalows.

Thirteen is investing over £30m into the housing scheme, as well as funding from Homes England and £3.6m from the Government's Brownfield Housing Fund, which will see the first new homes available for rent in summer 2022.

Thirteen's director of strategic partnerships, Sharon Thomas, said: "This long-awaited milestone is another step towards bringing much needed new homes to Gresham, and so much hard work has gone into making it happen.

"It's a really exciting scheme, and we're thrilled to be working with Middlesbrough Council and the Middlesbrough Mayor, the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Tees Valley Mayor as well as Homes England and other partners to deliver these fantastic new homes in the heart of the town, contributing to the revival of this historic neighbourhood."

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: "Gresham's been neglected and let down for far too long, but that's all changing now.

"Union Village is an amazing scheme that will deliver the sort of great quality, affordable homes that are key to our plans to revitalise the town centre.

"Our fantastic partnership with Thirteen is setting the standard for new housing across Middlesbrough for many years to come."
PRESS RELEASE

That press release is almost identical to the one released when Thirteen built a load of houses at Grove Hill.

No sign of any regeneration of the area around those houses. Still the same old dumping ground it was back then.

Do you ever have a bright side? Grove hill is improving by the day. All it needs is Pladium Buildings levelling.

Yes, pass almost every day. I know quite a few people. One step at a time.
I regularly have to take the Valley Road/Marton Burn Rd/Vale Road rat run. I did it today and thought I'd have a drive round and have a look around.

Yes there's lots of new/newish housing and still plenty of housing form the Sixties/Seventies. Plenty of land where we were told houses would be built that are still just wasteland.

I don't see anything that suggests the area has been "regenerated". The only school has long since been demolished and housed over, I couldn't see any sort of community centres, no medical practices (they maybe there but I didn't see any) and by your own admission the only shopping facilities need levelling. There was a an old fella outside St Oswalds church getting ready to do food bag drop, the people were always rough, some hard families you didn't mess with but a lot good hearted folk and thankfully looks like some of them still are thinking of others.

I went to school in Grove Hill, spent a great chunk of my childhood playing & roaming the streets of Grove Hill. I have a great sentimental attachment for the area but in no way has the area been regenerated as a result of Thirteen building some houses which is the point I was originally making.

I agree with most of that, a member of my family lived on Valley Road. But slowly but surely it's improving. The expanse of green spaces alone helps. The new housing is brining in new young families. Still a long way toward go.

those flats next to the shops are shocking, surely no one lives there as the windows are always smashed in? Used to be like that when I worked at Kirby college, amazed other month visiting my mum in hospice that it was still like that

This thread was meant to be about Gresham!🤔
Rob The town is improving all the time but these things take time as Morrissey once said. Union Village can’t do any harm, can it?
