Great App for Birdsong

The better half uses Birdnet when she comes across something she doesn't know, which is not very often. Most of these apps and for identifying flowers, insects etc are not to be relied on 100% - they can make some right bloomers. Your ears are more useful than your eyes when identifying birds as more often than not you don't get a clear view of them before they fly off.

Better than VAR tho

I use BirdNET which is mostly good but sometimes frustratingly bad. Might give Merlin a go.
I use Merlin and find it very effective. At one point had 14 different birdsongs identified at the same time and place.
Had no idea there were that many different ones there.

All the songbirds in our neighbourhood have been wiped out by magpies. Could do with something like this to listen to.

Yes, Merlin Bird ID is brilliant. It’s free, no ads, and is backed up by serious academic research by Cornell University. Just need to remember to download the appropriate database packages for the region of the world you are interested in.
Especially useful if the top end of your hearing range is starting to go - it will hear and identify birds you can’t see or even hear!
Also does a decent job of identifying birds from a photo you might have.

Out for a weekend of walking in the countryside with a mate I hadn’t seen for a while and he introduced me to the App ‘Merlin’

A kind of ‘shazam’ for birds - I’m loving it
It’s awesome, go for a walk most evenings, well, when I’m not at work. The only thing is, as soon as I put it on, a F***ing wood pigeon will appear from nowhere!!
Two Robins were singing to each other outside my house a couple of days ago, it was probably one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.
Having said that Blackbirds are my absolute favourite.
