GPS Trackers - Apple Air Tags and Samsung Smart Trackers

Having lost my luggage last year reading a story in the Times this morning about a Bride to be who flew to Italy was able to trace her lost luggage and guide staff to its exact location within the Airport in Gatwick. Because of a tracker She put in her case.

Sounds a great idea. Probably work for cars as well. Anybody else use them?

I heard of apps that can track people and the only thing you need is their phone number. Truly scary

Apparently they can warn you if someone is physically following you (presumably tracking phones in your vicinity).

I have a couple of Samsung tags got
them free with a phone, I put them in a couple of tool bags so if I'm unfortunate to get them knicked hopefully they will lead me back to them. Also handy when someone uses my van I can track them driving around

I understand Car thieves are using them to track movements of target cars and whether they move much. If a car hasn’t moved for a few days they can guess that the owner is away or not tracking it carefully.

Where on your bikes do you put them so a thief wouldn’t spot it?
On one of my bike I have taken the seatpost out and sandwiched between 2 pieces of foam ( carbon frame and seatpost) and on another bike ( titanium farme and this blocks the AirTag signal ) I have used an adapter that is underneath my water bottle cage and is hidden well ( Link).

I tracked our cases on our holiday (got back yesterday) using Apple Airtags. The work really well but you get a bit anxious as you board your plane and they are still showing in the airport!!

You can get 4 for £80 on Amazon so not too bad of a price.

And as for being secretly tracked you do get a notification on your phone with Airtags - I tried to track the wife to test them out and she rumbled me!! Not bad for keeping track of stuff. When we were away I had them on our bags in case anyone ran off with them etc. Now we are back home they are on our keys. Might pop one in the car.

I'm not sure about putting one on my bike. You need a bluetooth connection so if you are out on your own you'd have to have your phone with you to enable anyone to track you and your phone (Garmin / Strava) has a tracker on anyway.

And I wonder that if a thief is targeting high end road bikes they will be aware of all the places you can put an airtag and will have it quickly removed. I was thinking about putting one inside the frame to get round that.

If you are outside a cafe and they run off with your bike I suppose that might help but not so sure.

Do you have a link please to the £80 4 pack on Amazon? I can only see tile tags for that price - the Apple ones are £99.

Seems like an expensive way to do it, if you got into a car and it had a tracker that wasn't registered to your device it would also alert you a tracker was nearby, at least if it was an Apple one. Putting £20+ trackers on cars and then having to change iPhones because you get reported seems like poor business model for thieves rather than just looking at a car or just stealing it anyway 😂

I've googled it and it has happened but most stories link to low numbers, specifically a lot reference 5 cases reported by york police in Canada and a times article mentioning it happening with classic cars but was before Apple rolled out the notifications

I use a Wahoo Roam ( also when riding have my phone with me) and have set up live tracking but have put AirTags on my road bikes after a friend of mine recovered both of his stolen bikes by an opportunist who broke into his garage. Agreed It’s not perfect for high end bike thief’s who are aware of what they are doing but may help with the opportunist.👍
