Government decline to house rough sleepers

Expect a U turn in a few days when it gets sufficient media coverage, and celebrity backing.
Let's hope so.

My pet conspiracy is that Everyone In was too successful - effectively eradicating rough sleeping overnight. It showed that it isn't an immutable inevitability but a political choice the government has chosen to make. By passing the buck to councils it means that the gov can continue to wash their hands of it.

I don't think you would have an argument from any fair minded person that they should be helped. But I always thought it was the local councils responsibility to house ? I was involved in a tiny way with helping the homeless mens place in Stockton years ago, and it was claimed that a lot of the people categorised as homeless didn't want help.

Some rough sleepers don't want to be housed, and some would welcome it. Some "housed" rough sleepers would be a nightmare to have next door to you, and bring along their problems with them, so it's not really a simple and easy problem to solve.

As always, the headline only tells part of the story.

Remember watching a C4 documentary few years back and a lot of the rough sleepers were doing it out of choice. I was quite surprised. Many just couldn't handle to burden of earning money and paying rent and bills and found life on the street much simpler. It was very easy to get food from people and to make enough money begging to get by. That's not to say that there isn't a significant number of genuine cases that need helped

Perhaps SOME homeless have made a "lifestyle choice(!)" to sleep on the streets, but I'm guessing that for every one of them there's two or three others who are on the streets not by choice, but because they're fleeing domestic abuse, can't pay their rent as they've lost their jobs, have addiction issues which have sent them spiraling onto the streets etc

I work closely with collegues in this field and it is true that some people make a lifestyle choice. However, there is so much complexity to this that is not as simple as people making choices.

The vast increase in rough sleeping rates is criminal. IIRC almost 200% increase since 2010.

Can anybody think why the rates have soared since 2010 in particular? 🤔🤔🤔
