Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo sentenced to life

A former police officer known as the Golden State Killer for his crime spree across California in the 1970s and '80s was sentenced Friday to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Joseph DeAngelo, 74, who had eluded authorities for decades, pleaded guilty in June to 13 counts of first-degree murder and 13 rape-related charges in a deal that spared him the death penalty. He also publicly admitted to dozens more sexual assaults for which the statute of limitations had expired

I'm actually watching Golden State Killer unmasked on sky crime. I'm only on episode 3 of 7 and so far 56 rapes and 12 homicides😕

He's far 'worse' than many more infimus.

The majority of these are in the 70s as I guess no DNA or cctv etc. He pretty much got away with it until historical DNA caught him.

It's not easy watching and hard to believe it's actually real. Just breaking into peoples homes and doing horrific acts for over 10 years.

I think a new series 'drops' about it on sky next week from a famous book wrote about catching him called 'I'll be gone in the dark'.

It's mad looking at him now as an old man in a wheel chair. You couldn't believe anyone could do such things.

A family member of his used a DNA Ancestry website. How the girl who wrote the book, said he’d be caught.
Should DNA be taken for every newborn? Knowing your DNA is on a database would surely be a deterrent?

I’ll be home in the dark was written by American actor Patton Oswald’s wife michelle McNamara who sadly passed away a few years ago. She was named and thanked by the prosecution today.

Patton just tweeted this -

The insect gets none of my headspace today. I’m thinking of the victims, and the survivors, and the witnesses and crusaders and investigators. And of course Michelle. Go forward in peace, all of you.

It is an incredible story.

It is.

We sat down in our apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area where many of his crimes took place back in 2018 and watched the Netflix series about him. Bizarrely two days later he was arrested after all this time - a series of coincidences that really made me take notice of this story.

I watched the sky documentary. Its clearly morbid but very interesting and stunning how he got away with it for so long. I guess in the 70s/80s no DNA or CCTV. That's probably why he packed in when he did. To think Ted Bundy was around at the same time😕

The way he was caught was pretty fascinating. Also all the changed in law enforcement that came from these crimes like Rape Kits / 911 dedicated number / interviews recoded etc.

To think Ted Bundy was around at the same time😕

..and much closer to those crimes, there was also the Zodiac killer who preyed in San Francisco and the Bay Area as well.

Two killers / rapists operating in the Bay Area much have been terrifying.

If you haven't seen the film Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal, & Robert Downey Jr it's pretty good.

Really good podcast on him via Case File. Was aired just before he was caught.

The scope and escalation of his crimes throughout the 70's and early 80's are crazy. Looks like he started as the Cordova Cat Burglar and generally escalated from there. Must have been absolutely terrifying for the victims as he would often stay for hours after the attack, making food, drinking beer etc then when they thought he had gone would jump out and rape them again.

'I'll be gone in the dark' starts on sky crime on Monday. Think it's 6 episodes and all availible at once to binge.

Based on a famous book about the subject. It's also been updated as its now clearly had a conclusion👍
