Giles off to Hull

My lad said when he signed for Luton ''he will be out of the team by Christmas''. He gave him too much credit...out of the team by the end of September, out of the club by January.

He was great from an attacking perspective last year for us - but was surely always going to get found out defensively in the PL for a team who would be playing predominantly on the back foot.

Odd signing for Luton, poor choice of club by the player.

its a strange case. he was definitely in the right club at the right time here. i think he will struggle at hull in terms of his numbers. plus he daren't head a ball

The odd thing about the signing was that they already had someone get good in his position. It wasn't a particular weakness for them so an odd position to be spending money on.

Loan with a obligation to buy him for £4.5 million.

Not sure that's the greatest deal I've seen. Think I'd rather have Engel (a defender who can defend) for less than half the price.
I agree I think Engel has much more to his game than providing assists he can defend which in that position is the number one requirement.

Weird. The whole transfer seemed based on the fact that he and Rob Edwards knew each other.

Giles wasn’t the best at actually defending and should have scored goals from his attacking positions. Overpriced and over rated.

Hull are really going for it this season and I suspect they may be in real trouble with FFP if they don't go up, which is unlikely on balance.

In terms of Giles, he's better than what we have for sure, but then he'd eat up much more of the budget than either Engel or Bangura.

Surprised with this as he went to Luton to play Premier league football and will be on around £30k/week wages. luton will have parachute payments next season and a new stadium.

I agree with Hull and money - they paid £5m for the lad from Villa, have a Turkish international and the recent senior Liverpool guy on loan. Their crowds are below the average in the Championship and I can't think of any big sales in the last 12 months.
I doubt he is on anywhere near 30k a week. Odd one if there is an obligation to buy regardless of whether they go up or not. £4.5M is a lot for a championship club to spend on a full back without parachute money.
Good luck to him. Always liked him at Boro and I think better than Engel.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat. He's far better than Engel and Bangura. He was pivotal to the way we played last season and created loads of chances for us. It was a myth that he couldn't defend, and got better as the season went on. If we had have signed him in the summer he'd have had another 6 months of being coached and I have no doubt would be even better now.

It would be hilarious if RE had Luton bid as a favour to Giles just to squeeze a better contract out of us and we walked away leaving them the only bidders and they went through with it to save face.

He's never been on loan to Hull before. It's understandable he'd want to plug that glaring gap on his CV. Huddersfield Town after that...

This may be an unpopular opinion but Giles shone for boro last year for 2 reasons. Firstly, we played to his strengths and a lot went through him. Secondly he had Akpom to finish his chances.

Had we had Akpom this year, engel would have had more than his 3 assists. If we hadn't had akpom last year Giles wouldn't have got 11 assists. Similarly we don't play through Engel so he doesn't get the opportunities that Giles had.

He is a decent attacking LB in the championship. He was never worth the money luton spent on him, given the way they play.

I mean he was great for us but he did give the ball away leading to Hamer's goal for Coventry in the play-off semi. Not that I'm holding a grudge or anything.

Agree.

When he was at Blackburn they couldn't decide if he was a winger or left back and ended up out of the team I think.

He's not that proven at this level.

It's almost as if Luton saw those assist stats and didn't bother looking into anything else. Really odd signing for them.

I don’t see why he couldn’t perform the jones role on the left hand side for a team, puts a great ball in and can track back and help out his full back when needed, would make a good left wing back.

Some people are still bitter that he signed for luton over us.
