Ghost Grounds

Interesting stuff, indeed. It’s always shocking to me how something as large and as apparently permanent as a much loved football ground can just be wiped out.

The interesting one - and that carousel doesn't do it justice - is the ground of New Brighton Tower FC.

The ground was built with a capacity of over 100,000. It was (in theory) the biggest stadium in England, and second only to Hampden Park in the UK.

I don't think there was ever a crowd bigger than about 10,000 there, but someone obviously had huge ideas.

Nice post Soutra. Yes it was one of those places built for greatness and apart from holding the world motor cycling championships In the early 20s never fulfilled its ambition. Looked impressive from the air.

The tower was demolished after WWI - taller than Blackpool and the tallest structure in Britain when built. They had high aspirations in New Brighton.

Great stuff. If I ever get round to completing the 91 (or 90, or 89 or whatever it is now), I want to try to get to as many grounds where league football has been played as possible, including places like these. It's well over 200.

I think most of the grounds I visited have been replaced.

I went to Fartown (Huddersfield) to see a Yorkshire JPL match.

I remember the Rugby pitch and also a Bowling green.

SeedHill Stadium was also home to Nelson Speedway, The Admirals.
Their captain Dave Schofield, won the first Teesside Silver Helmet of the modern era at Cleveland Park in 1968.NelsonGrandstand.jpg
