Getting your first allotment

Just thrown my name into the hat for my first ever allotment - it's 11m x 5m so I'd guess that would be small to medium sized? Anyhow, I've not got green fingers and have no experience whatsoever in growing my own veg but keen to learn and have always been interested in getting one.

Anyhow, for any of you lot with allotments how much time would be reasonable to expect to dedicate to an allotment of this size? And are their any big do's or dont's to consider? Thank you.

That seems a fair size and should keep you busy. I only had mine a couple of years so not that experienced but a few things I have learned
Grow the things you will eat most, Take your time and start with a small plot first, need a small shed for when it rains, dont plant everything at the same time or you will have lots of stuff all ready so stagger your planting times.
Most of all, enjoy yourself

First bit of advice I can give you is go and take a look at before you take it on and make sure it’s manageable for you.

We got one a few years ago and it was like Amazon with a covering of thick grass and no existing beds visible. The missus got pregnant about 2 months later so was all down to me and it naturally got ditched.

If it is a mess, don’t be afraid of taking on say 1/3 this year and getting it up to scratch and then attacking another 1/3 next year.

Raised beds could also be an option. to allow you to further divvy up those spaces!

As HSB said, get your planning sorted so your don’t end up with just a glut at the end of summer.

Ive got a large raised bed in the garden now and one of my favourite things is sitting down not long after Xmas with my seed packets and working out what I’m going to sow and when.
