Took the merc to 2nd on the grid (very nearly 1st) when he has not even driven the 2020 car before

Surely this puts to bed the argument that it’s the car not the driver

Bit disrespectful to Russell saying it’s the car. he is almost certainly a future champion, they haven’t just pulled some bloke off the street to drive it

Think we’ve got a thread covering this ground already!

Not a great performance from bottas and the pack is closer than it has been for some time (although a short track obviously helps).
Who knows what time lewis would’ve posted? More to the point, after 7 WDCs, who cares?

Not at all the kid has talent for sure, but the fact he drives a Williams and gets nowhere near the front, then steps in a merc he has never even sat in before and gets within 26 thousandths of a second of pole is not skill or talent... it’s the car

If that was the case surely Bottas would be challenging Hamilton more ?

It’s not the case. It’s the usual trite argument that gets trotted out when someone doesn’t like a driver. It’s an undeniable fact that the Mercedes is the quickest car on the grid. But that reason Hamilton gets to drive it is because he’s the quickest driver. Simple as that. If red bulls engine had been more powerful they would have competed with Mercedes and asked him to drive for them. Fangio changed cars and was always in the most competitive one. Didn’t to stop him being one of the greats. If Mercedes hadn’t dominated the turbo hybrid era Lewis would have got a drive with whoever did. The fact they have means he hasn’t had to chop and change drives.
