I was very privileged to be asked to write a song to add to the unveiling of George’s statue on Friday. I’m no Ivor Novello but the family were really moved by my efforts so I will perform it as part of the event. Terrified. As in the case of all of my songs - I don’t receive payment but if well received I will record it for a charity agreed by his family.
Others have already posted…the event takes place at 7.30pm on Friday and I understand that bar / cafe in Fans Zone is open in advance. I have offered to put a pre-record musical playlist together to add some atmosphere whilst people gather and thought some of you may have appropriate suggestions. George was - by all accounts, a very humble and quite religious man - obviously growing up around Framwellgate Moor in the early 20th century but his family want this event to be ‘for the fans’ and so any songs that maybe evoke a memory of your love of Middlesbrough and Teesside could work - I will try and include any suggestions.
Finally… I thought it worth sharing that the road over the bridge will be closed for the Ali Brownlee 5k run but the club has requested access for visitors to this event - just worth knowing it may not be a simple drive up so give yourself some time. I think the event will be relatively short - hosted by the club but very much a chance for us all to pay tribute and remember this very special man.
