General Election 2022

Anyone else think there seems to be signs this is forthcoming?

Labour now starting to tall policy; no deal with SNP, no referendum, long term plans for NHS etc.

Johnson perhaps seeing this as a sh*t or bust moment and hoping he can somehow get the 'protest' votes in the by-elections back to voting Tory and if they win another majority it makes him safe. Also perhaps a way to deflect from select Committee investigation. Could also view it as a way to ensure those who are making moves against him come together to work jointly in favour of the Tory election campaign...

What would happen if a general election was callled. The conservatives won but boris lost his seat?
I think
Either - new leader
or
Someone would stand down in a safe Tory seat (in exchange, no doubt, for a knighthood) and Johnson would be shipped in

Technically I think that if Johnson were given a peerage he can still PM even if he loses his seat or at least that's what I was told once upon a time. Might not be correct however.

An early election will only be called when Johnson has no other way to stay in power. He is a rat and will only act like a trapped rat when he has to.

There was talk that if starmer got fined and walked the Tory's would call a snap election to try extend their rule during the leadership chaos but seems like it's be ill thought out atm

This seems like the kind of desperate, dirty trick they would pull. Snap election while Labour had no leader in place, with no time for a leader to impose their will or thoughts on policy ideas or sell a vision to the public.

Not a chance

He wouldn’t dare go to the polls now as then he’d have to answer and justify things he won’t even refer to now.

Not just to the country but to his own party.

He’s toxic snd becoming more toxic by the week.

Exactly what Jedi says, no way they would go to the polls anytime soon. Unless they had a new leader then it might be worth a punt, before the new leader is outed as being as corrupt and morally reprehensible as BJ (take about a month)

Not strictly true as the sir Alex Douglas Holme clause doesn’t really exist now

As both labour and the tories have a rule that the PM MUST come from the House of Commons.

Nowadays, a Lord cannot be Prime Minister. It was different in the past, but it is now agreed that the PM must be an elected MP. The Lord would have to renounce his peerage, then be elected an MP. This happened in the past when Lord (in fact. the Earl of) Home renounced the earldom, was elected to Parliament, and became PM as Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

Is this law or it one of those constitutional 'gentlemen's agreement' arrangements? If it's the latter then get ready for Lord Johnson of Spaffing and Grifting as PM.

In effect Nothing about our election process is in law as we don’t have a written constitution as such so it’s all convention and agreements with a few statutes to back it up (but these too can be changed repealed. )

BUT if the commons were to go down this road then it neuters then commons overnight and makes them irrelevant so IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Most people would be shocked at how little is enshrined in law about how we are governed. To be fair and how easy these am be changed.

If you are a lord and pm you couldn't speak in commons. Pmqs would be even more pointless having to run next door to get his non answers. I know it is not going to happen as Johnson wouldn't dare call an election at the minute. He won't care if he loses by 1 seat or 100 as if he isn't leader he won't be bothered who is in power party wise.
