Gavi compensation

Fifa will pay Barcelona €4.9 mill in compensation as Gavi will be out for 7 to 9 months, even though it was the Spanish FA and their teams responsibility Fifa will still pay out. Has that happened before?

A very dangerous precedent. Gavi was injured playing for Spain in something of a dead rubber. Just a quick read and it wasn't even a tackle he twisted his knee and tore his ACL unchallenged.

I've never heard of this happening or even being mooted before. We've had times when players have mysteriously been unavailable for unimportant games. Bellingham dropped out of this round of England games, not sure if he is injured or not. Famously Ryan Giggs was often "injured" for Wales friendlies.

How many times have Boro had players get injured while on interna duty, can we take fifa to court? Every team is gonna want to take them to court now

I would have thought national FAs and/or FIFA would have appropriate insurance - club claim against FA, FA claim insurance. Possibly FAs have similar arrangement with FIFA

I thought this was standard , just as compo is for when they are made available for international tournaments.

A few weeks back FIFA had still not paid out all the monies owed for the last World Cup for this. So Barca may have to wait a while for there money.

I thought this was standard too.

Honestly made me sad to read about the Gavi injury. He is such a brilliant talent, I like watching him even more than Pedri. As a football fan would be horrible if he doesn’t have the career he could have had because of an ACL, and there’s not many worse injuries for players it seems.

Did give me pause for how much Barca play their very young players - which is a brilliant, admirable thing, to try and develop your own youth rather than buy ready made galacticos when you’re at that level of a club. But Pedri in particular has played an absurd amount of games, think it was something like 90 in a calendar year in the World Cup year - almost every minute for Barca and Spain that year, aged 19.

I know Gavi’s injury was a freak occurrence but it makes you think.

As said above, standard across the industry at high level.

Football players are multi million pound assets to privately held companies (mainly). Of course they are going to be insured to the hilt.

It is often something that is lost on football fans when you see things like 'we paid his wages for 2 years whilst he was injured then he wanted to leave'. Actually, insurance paid his wages. Likewise, when players retire because of injury, the club will get a lump sum equivalent to their worth.

Naturally, I'm sure further up the pyramid you go the more comprehensive the insurance, I'm not sure our policy on Hackney will be quite the same as Man City's on Haaland but the principles the same.

I'd imagine these policies only cover club games and internationals are covered by individual FA policies or an umbrella one from FIFA that the FA pays into.

Bellingham missed Real Madrid's last game because of a shoulder injury. Hardly a mystery!
