Gareth to Man U ???

Needs to win euros to even be given a chance by united fans, I feel. Otherwise knives will be out before he's even started. Can't see him being a succes there if it happens.

Don't think there's much chance of it happening unless England win the Euros.

There'd be a big backlash, especially with the entitled Manchester United media mob.

I think it could work as long as Southgate had the right assistant alongside.

I have a feeling that Southgate's area of weakness is his in game management, whether to stick or twist. Some people seem to have an instinctive feeling where as most do not.

If he has the right person alongside him in those key moments then it could work. I think Southgate has the emotional intelligence and respect within the game to do the job.

I think he is exactly what Man Utd need, i.e. somebody who can build a "team" out of egocentric millionaires. That is his greatest achievement with England, the ability to foster a team spirit and togetherness I've not seen with England in 30 years.

As for the perception of negativity, that will be quickly dispelled once his team is scoring lots of goals, just as his England team has always done.

I'd actually really like to see him given a go at Man Utd - it may just "work".

The England experience will have helped his progression enormously too.

Best of luck to him if this is happening, but sign off from England with a trophy eh?

International management is a very very different job to club management. The relentless grind of high pressure matches, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week, season in , season out - especially at a big club that is expected to win trophy's. That is very different to managing England with one tournament every 2 years and qualification in between where many of matches are against minnows and are not properly competitive.

I am not sure GS will want to put himself through the grinder. He doesn't need the money or that kevel of stress and the 80 hour week for 48 weeks of the year.

He has some lovely qualities, but I always get the impression he is quite a sensitive person and the constant criticism will get to him.

Agree. He may want to prove he can do it at Club level but my feeling is Man United wont be the place to do it. Too much pressure and demand for instant success.

I wouldn’t wish that on Sir Gareth to be honest.

If he chooses to leave England and we should hope he doesn’t then he would be well suited to a team on the continent. Link up with Harry Kane at Bayern?

I think it would be a bad move for him. Man United fans are notoriously short term, impatient after so many years of going in the wrong direction, and also very negative towards England. He'd have to rebuild an entire club, deal with the internal politics, have to get involved in a lot of non-football nonsense, and make a decent fist of turning an extremely over expensive average squad into contenders for every competition. All with twice weekly press conferences to a dubious media.

He'd be more than welcome to pop round the corner to my house for a post-match brew though. We could have chuckle at some of the fan reactions on X.
