Funny Cow - a film I would recommend - Film 4 are showing it

It about a working class woman trying to make it as a stand up comedian in Yorkshire in the 1970s. She starts off with working mens clubs and she has to break new ground (it was said before her, women on stage in working mens clubs had to be singers or strippers). The film skips about in time from her childhood to early days as a comic to a period when she is earning good money. I saw it a second time last night and it was even better the second time. I can see bits of my family in it and even myself. It might be the same for some other posters. Maxine Carr is excellent in the main role.

Soundtrack matched the film quite haunting at times, but also odd surreal moments like a cowboy song in a near empty pub and Maxine Carr and her violent boyfriend start dancing around the pub pretending to be riding horses.

Maxine Carr?!! Now, that's a piece of casting!!

Great film though, very realistic depiction of 70's Britain, right down to everyone wearing beige and brown and dodgy curtain and wallpaper.

Maxine Peake was incredible in the role. Great script written by the bloke who used to play Archie in Emmerdale Farm!
