Forss and Rogers playing in the wrong positions

Forss really frustrated me today. Two or three times he shot after cutting inside onto his left foot, and each time I didn't feel he was in a position to score really.

I appreciate that if you don't shoot you don't score but just felt he was wasteful today.

I do also appreciate however that he's a striker being asked to play as a winger, and to be honest I think Carrick has got it wrong playing him on the wing and Rogers up front. I think it would have made more sense to play Forss up front and then one of either Rogers, Jones or Silvera on the right.

Carrick saw something in Chuba that made him think Chuba could play as a 10, and I can't help but feel he's hoped he could achieve the same thing with Rogers, i.e. find a new position for Rogers, but it hasn't worked for me.

Totally agree and given we had no out and out striker I thought, surely Carrick will be pragmatic and put Forss in there and Rogers on the right so yeah, Carrick has to own this game as one he got wrong.
We are significantly weaker than the final few games of the season and rabbits need to be pulled from a few hats to get things moving as it doesn’t get any easier versus Coventry!

I feared the worst with Giles Chuba Howson Archer T.Smith and Ramsey missing from the first 11 from last season

We had the same conversation during the game - Forss was bought as a striker (presumably) and has the right instincts. Rogers doesn't appear to have those same instincts. I liked his attitude though - didn't hide and kept trying

Rogers isn’t a striker. He just doesn’t have the instinctive movement. On the odd occasion he found himself a bit wider he looked quite direct and threatening though, I’d definitely swap the two of them if we’ve still got the same options next league game

You can't say that after one game. Well you can say it, but there isn't enough data yet to know if it's accurate.

I'm not against this, but I think it's far too early to abandon him as a 9 already. People already made their mind up before he kicked a pre-season ball that he couldn't be a striker because he hadn't scored goals as a winger for a poor Blackpool. He' 20, he's learning, and being asked to learn on the job, in a half a team. Cut the lad a bit of slack. He did lots of positive stuff today, but no one created any real opportunities for him today.

Playing Rogers up front hasn't really worked pre-season, we've had a fairly poor pre-season, so it would have made more sense to play Forss up front. We then would have had several decent options for the wide right position.

I could understand Forss playing on the right last season when we had Archer, but at this moment in time Forss is arguably the best natural striker we have at the club. He should have started up front today.

While I agree in principal and Rogers looked far more comfortable playing off Crooks, Forss completely disappeared out of the game when he was moved up front

True, maybe he does need a bit of time to grow into the role, but frankly I'm not prepared to support Carrick giving him that time, particularly as we have a player in Forss who is a natural striker and should be played as one, or at least until another striker is brought into the club.

Tbf, forss did alright from the wing last season didn't he?! He was scoring goals, causing problems for teams and people were loving him on the right side 👍

I like Forss playing on the right side, it's just as this moment in time I feel he's the best striker we have at the club, so he should be playing as a striker.

Thought Morgan was ok up front. Worked hard, laid the ball off first time but no shots. Play Morgan where he is, Forss in the number 10 to receive the layoffs from Morgan and score. The layoffs today went to Crooks, McGree and Hackney who wont shoot.

Absolutely Agree but we need a striker and forss is that
Interesting that Carrick gives opportunities to rogers but won’t give a natural finisher in Coburn an opportunity 🤔

Yes he could definitely improve over time, but I think Carrick has even acknowledged he’s “having to play there”, unless I’ve missed something about that being the long term plan for him?
Maybe a touch harsh criticising the lack of movement yesterday as Millwall were very compact so there wasn’t much space, I just thought his best flashes came when he was a bit deeper and wider.

When teams sit back like Millwall we need someone on the flanks that can beat a man. Silvera did it in the second half. I think Jones could have done it on the right. As was said above, Forss was even more out of the game when he went central. Not surprising as the 2 brick 5hithouses in Millwalls defence were twice his size. Last season Forss got 10 goals and 5 assists from the right so no reason for Carrick to think he was not worthy of that spot.
Rogers gave a 8/10 performance from me in the context of his inexperience and playing against not one but two big lumps at the back on his own. No wonder he had to try and drop deep. 10/10 for effort. 6/10 effectiveness.
I think most of us thought it was going to be tough v Millwall and most of the teams put up by fans were pretty much what Carrick picked.
