Middlesbrough and Millwall are eyeing up the signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates, according to The Mirror (Live Transfer Blog; 15/09; 10:16).
Yates has started both of Forest’s games this season and was a regular in the team under Sabri Lamouchi during the second half of last season.
The report claims that the academy graduate is in the sights of Forest’s Championship rivals as Gary Rowett and Neil Warnock look to complete their squads.

Yates has been out on loan a few times. He has a successful partnership with George Grant at Notts County three seasons ago.
He can distribute the ball well and is an attack - minded player.
He could do a job for us.

Does he score goals? The lowest scorers in the champo last season and 5th lowest season before (despite finishing 7th)

Something needs to give. I don't think Morsy or Hall will help😂

Forest have backed Lamouchi in the transfer market this summer, with eight new arrivals, as Jack Colback, Tyler Blackett, Lyle Taylor, Fouad Bachirou, Luke Freeman, Miguel Angel Guerrero, Loic Mbe Soh and Abdoulaye Diallo have all put pen to paper.

The Reds have made eight additions so far in the transfer window, while Matty Cash and Tyler Walker - who, like Yates, also came up through the club - have been sold to Aston Villa and Coventry City, respectively.

Yates made 28 appearances in the Garibaldi last term, scoring at home and away against Boro, as well as one against Huddersfield Town.

On signing his new deal, the youngster said at the time: “I came in at eight-years-old and came through the ranks with the dream to play at the City Ground one day.

“I have been lucky enough to play a few times and I just want to keep progressing and learning on and off the pitch.”

The logic at Trees is that they werent strong enough to sustain a challenge for promotion last season and have had a big clear-out, including players Matty Cash and Tyler Walker [Des Wlaker`s lad]. They have a reputation for hiring and firing managers and players - George Grant and Ben Brereton were young players [for instance] who appeared to have solid futures - signing contracts - but quickly exited The City Ground as new manager(s) arrived and departed. Brereton is now at Blackburn. Grant is at Lincoln City.

On a related point: Zach Clough [Remember him?!] is still Forest player after they paid over 3M GBP`s for his services with a four and a half year contract: he hasnt played for Forest since January 2018! He was last on loan at Rochdale.

Trees live in a bubble all of their own - there have been calls to sack the current Manager - who is no. 23 or 24 in the last 20 - odd years.

Prefer Josh Cullen WHU loan
or James Garner MU Loan ( signed for Watford on loan )
or Oli Rathbone Rochdale £450k
Or Michael Jacobs free
Or Alex Garcia free
Marcus Maddison free
Curtis Jones Loan
Luke ilic Loan
Luke McCormick Loan

From their forum - comments about Yates after they lost vs QPR:

I don't know why Yates is getting all the abuse. He wasn't great but he was from the worst player on the pitch. My issue with him is purely he is very much the Eric Dier mould of player and with Colback next to him our base is too slow and negative.

this isn't Yates issue to answer, he's made it abundantly clear he can't pass the football, so why is this player continually picked when we're leaking goals & not scoring?

we just looked loads better except for Yates

That CM position these days needs more than just winning 50/50's and headers

So we're linked with another vanilla midfielder.......great:sleep:

I think I would actually put my head in my hands if we signed another central mid.
We're going with Wingbacks 5-3-2 we need two good players for every position.
Name the SIX good midfielders (not counting McNair who will be playing centreback)

If you rely on forums you only have to look at our own:unsure:
Trees Fans were saying last season that Grabban couldnt break sweat, let alone score - at one point - so dont flatter them by giving their opinions any credence.

I would be more excited if we were linked with Joe Lolley.

He always does well against Boro.
Sadly a none starter.

I can only quote what was floating about in the media.
We havent the Lolly to afford Joe and I think they are [temporarily] better placed than us [at the moment].

You don't need 2 players for every position. People kept saying this under Karanka. Gibson/Ayala every game. Clayton/Leadbetter every game. George Friend and nsue every game.
Having 11 good players is better than having 22 mediocre ones. Just buy a few back ups and have the academy kids covering. If you're going to buy 2 players for every position scrap the academy and invest the savings into the team.

i agree, all the best teams over the years have had tight squads and managed ok.
Liverpools’s great Shankly teams, Leeds under Revie and Boro under Charlton had 12 or 13 men in their squads, aye and played on quagmire pitches too.
This modern trend of 28+ squads is ridiculous.
Players today are subbed with a broken bootlace.
