foreign holidays - illegal from Monday 29th

What’s that got to do with conspiracy theories? We haven’t been able to do any of those things for months
Yes correct.

Believe it or not there are people out there who predicted those scenarios in April last year. They were dismissed as conspiracy theories.

Ain't it funny that most of what they predicted has actually come true? Obviously the 5G b***ks is exactly that, but the rest has gradually come to light over the last 12 months.

By the way it's against human rights laws to make leaving the country illegal.

Predicted not being allowed mass gatherings or foreign travel during a global pandemic? Hardly a bold prediction, surely it was fairly obvious these restrictions would be needed?

Why not 20% of *all annual pre tax earnings from all sources including investments at home and abroad* - that would make the rich burgers hesitate a little

Nope, we threw the pandemic plan out of the window. Chris Whitty publicly stated "during an epidemic (flu) all sorts of measures are called for..... travel restrictions, airport screening.... they are all utterly useless" (words v close to that effect, I can dig up the lecture if you like).

Border closures were not recommended by the WHO (Oct 2019) for a flu pandemic of any severity. The reason? It causes utter carnage. Exactly as we have seen.

And before anyone says "but this isn't the flu!"..... No it isn't. It is a coronavirus, a highly infectious respiratory virus like the flu. And there have been Flu pandemics will similar and greater mortality rates.

Imagine this was said in 2020

Leaving the country - illegal
Kid's birthday parties - illegal
Visiting mum or dad - illegal
Sitting outside with friends - illegal

But, but, but cOnsPiraCy TheORy. 👀

Yup, totally mad.

If we hadn't shut everything on the 23rd last year we'd have been in a very similar position now. We didn't know it at the time but we had hit peak infections already ~16th March.

Parliament rushed through the coronavirus act hand government emergency powers.......... and we find ourselves where we are.

Following the variant logic through to it's conclusion - it's my understanding that in future we may need to be annually vaccinated against new strains identified
That's not been definitively established. As it stands, all the current vaccines provide virtually 100% protection from serious illness or death even with the new variants.

If it continues this way - and depending on how long the protection from the current vaccines lasts, we might not need to be re-vaccinated until or unless the current levels of protection wane or newer variants emerge that can completely elude the current crop of vaccines.

The main threat I think, is the latter possibility and the longer it takes before all countries around the world are able to vaccinate the majority of their populations, the greater the risk.

Having said that, companies are already developing vaccines designed specifically to combat new variants and one (Moderna) has already started clinical trials of a vaccine for the South African variant.

So I can foresee a situation in a few years where "variant vaccines" are available but people will treat them a bit like the current flu vaccines where only a proportion of the population (those who feel more at risk) choose to take them.

Thanks, useful summary. In that case I think it's even more pressing that there is some transparency around the current variants of concern (hand in hand with any future travel restrictions)

Incidentally, has anyone looked at the exemption form? It's pretty basic at best, write down who you are, where you're going and why. Evidential burden on the traveller but the guidance seems pretty vague and ultimately could be interpreted on a whim (either way) by border officials.

That might be the case for flu, but this is far more contagious and far more deadly. Look at how well Brazil are doing without these restrictions you want rid of

That isn't clear cut. The recent trial looking at the affect of AZ on the South African variant concluded that it was 10% effective and the positive cases were mild or moderate. But the trial was only carried out on 18-64 year olds where you wouldn't, statistically, expect to see one death for that age group with the numbers involved. It's highly unlikely we won't be getting further vaccinations in the Autumn for the new variants.

Serious adverse event rates were similar between the vaccine and placebo groups. Only one severe vaccine-related event occurred, a fever of 40°C (104°F) following the first dose; the fever cleared within 24 hours, and no adverse events were seen after the participant's second dose.

The authors cautioned that the lack of severe COVID-19 cases in the study was likely a reflection of the relatively young mean age of participants (30 years) and thus that the trial could not determine whether the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective against severe infection with the B1351 variant.

Despite our world leading vax program? Klaus&Co are already have towels on all the best sun loungers in many resorts. And they still have fewer dead people from covid and are handling the so called 3rd wave better than Blojob could handle a fridge door.

Boris: Vax passports? Never!!
EU: we want vax certs to facilitate safe travel.
Boris : ok then. Good idea. Let's get that done.
