Everywhere has 'not so bright' people. I think these people are scared and cling on to simple narratives that they feel they can control.

I have this morning been reading a thread on my local areas community Facebook page where there has been a raging debate been taking place on face masks and some people ( not many I should thankfully emphasise) have been saying similar things about a liberal conspiracy or as one said "if god wanted us to wear a mask we would have a flap across our nose and mouth"!

This is all down to years of Republican negligence. How grown men and women have allowed their party and politics to be hijacked by right wingers and crackpots is beyond sad.
Being scared of a tweet has enabled Trump to push them further and further right and it'll be really hard for the likes of those behind the Lincoln Project to reclaim it from the nutters.
I think the fact that he's pushing them into the realms of autocracy, if not a dictatorship is finally hitting home, but they're probably hoping that the voting public do their dirty work for them so they don't need to stand up to Trump. His commutation of Stone's sentence and the way that Barr has attempted to behead the District Attorney's Offices in DC, Eastern and Southern New York just to protect Trump from investigation should make them all grow a pair otherwise it is entirely possible that Trump's base and those who he might sway using racial tensions could re-elect him.

Add in the attack on the universities last week and how they were teaching left wing bias and so he’ll look into their text exemption status.

That's true. Culturally different places though. I'm not defending their actions but there is a culture of the individual in the USA .I get that.

Yeah, Larry Kudlow's comments about schools getting back to teaching 'whatever it is they teach' was very disturbing. There is clearly a belief that education is a dangerous thing to this new Republican cult of Trump.

Schools can have a political slant in the USA. NYC is very liberal/progressive. There's quite a lot of local power on certain elements of the school programmes in the USA. For example States can decide , within reason, what they teach.
