First they came for the toilets...

I am always amazed at how uptight the British are over toilets. In France, if the gent's toilets are full, people will use the female toilets and vice versa. No one bats an eyelid.

...but I did not speak out because I had a wee before I left the house.

Surely this must be the lamest culture war effort yet? Not one second of government time should be spent on this.

Yes, let’s not protect 50.9% of the population.
Let’s not allow them safe spaces, like toilets and changing rooms. They really don’t need that because there is no record of women and female children being filmed and those images being posted on websites. Nor are there any incidents of women being intimidated by men in toilets.
It is not an issue on which a party should make political capital, but it is important.
I know you and many others in here will disagree, and that the arguments have been rehearsed numerous times, but there is an alternative view to which I strongly adhere.

So many small cafes/businesses only have space for single loos.

The tories are doing something else that harms small businesses and in favour of a ridiculous culture war.
Wrong - picking the wrong topic for a mini rant.

The new provisions apply to new builds and existing builds going under major refurbishment.

In any event the change to building regulations will also allow contained, universal toilets in addition to single-sex toilets where space allows, or instead of single-sex toilets where there is not enough space.

A universal toilet is defined by the government as a self-contained room with a toilet and sink for individual use.

Many small cafes and businesses have facilities like this now.

It's a "wedge" issue which they deliberately use to distract people's attention from the real cause of ordinary people's issues:
Government corruption.
Letting their mates screw the taxpayer.
Selling arms to fuel genocide.
Continuing attack on wages, conditions of employment, dismantling the NHS, the post record high level of homelessness, etc.
They want us to talk about taking a dump by whipping up moral panic.
Perhaps those whipping up the moral panic should take a dump - flush themselves down the bog where they belong!

I'm not sure if it's the Baker Street Café with one bog-standard [excuse the pun] toilet which is used by everyone.
Telling a small business to pay for planning permission, installation of pipework and drainage and everything else is just a pzz take (n)

Fair enough - I worry it is going to add complications to planning that we have coped without.

We should definitely be looking at ways of protecting women from abuse and provide safety. I just personally think this is not achieving that and is pure soundbite rather than actual action - like increased police, with specially trained officers, review of the prosecution in sexual and domestic abuse cases, and better restraint on those previously found guilty of partner abuse.
