First Omicron Case Has Been Confirmed in Middlesbrough

Think the Omicron variant has over 30 spike proteins it can use to latch onto where as the Delta one only had around 10. Scientists can look at its structure under a microscope to analyse the mutations.

Covids Swiss army knife apparently. Just what we need in time for Christmas. 1m infections by the end of the month they reckon. Less severe but rampant. NHS goose looks cooked sadly.

It's only a small percentage of PCR tests that actually reveal the variant isn't it? Something like 20%?

I think that (if my memory is correct), the fact that many cases show different symptoms which are similar to the common cold, then I think it's a racing certainty that it's here already in decent numbers.

The majority of staff at my work place 6 weeks ago had all really bad colds coughs and fevers with fatigue etc. PCR's kept coming back negative so we were all convinced it was one of these super colds that were knocking about, not so sure now. It's probably been here in big numbers for a while but it needed an African testing unit to alert us to what our own testing places should have been doing.

I think the normal tests detect it as Covid just the detecting it as Omincron is the tircky bit

The percentage of tests being sent for sequencing was 49% in early March and as little as 5% in early July. Although I can't find recent figures I suspect the current figure will be significantly higher, albeit I still think Omnicron is here in far higher numbers than those recorded.
