Finch

Saturday looked like the perfect opportunity to bring him on and see what he can do. We already know Silvera isn’t a striker - Finch is and has been doing well and scoring goals lately for the U23’s. I don’t know why he wasn’t given the chance after Lath went off as it looked tailor made for him to come on as a straight swap. Why have him on the bench if others who aren’t strikers are going to get the nod ahead of him anyway ?

The boss decided otherwise yesterday, but Finchy was also playing today in the U21`s defeat at home to Spurs.
He was out for a while, having started the season doing well for the U21`s and being on the bench.
He's back now, almost to full strength, and scored two against Manchester Utd U21`s on 8th March.

He must be crap if Sammy silvera is deemed a better option as a striker. Carrick doesn’t believe in giving youngsters a chance it seems!

Perhaps you didn't read the match-day thread [?] with Carricks comments on Sonny Finch:

A final word about Sonny Finch, who did well at the back end of last season and was then out with injury and has worked hard to get fit and back into the U21`s. He scored a brace in the 3-2 victory over Man Utd U21`s last week and appears to be back to his best. Carrick is very protective though and understands how young players need to be managed and coached to get them fit and capable of consistently producing their best. He was particularly pleased for sonny Finch:

[I`m] delighted for Finch. He's kind of had a few issues with his ankle for on and off for a period of time, so [we] took the decision to try and get it sorted.......be patient with him, give him a period of time and get back training and get fit.......he's playing and scoring goals and that's kind of what he does. He always finds a way of finding the back of the net, and it's great to see the longer it goes we'll get him around us as time goes on. But yeah, it's great to see him back fit, and he's so young. It's the start of his career, he's got his whole career ahead of him, so Lo loads of time for Finchy.

Those of us who go back a bit have seen so many second team strikers who fans demanded be given a go but who ultimately weren't good enough, or at least weren't ready. Hopefully Sonny won't join the long list who either end up in the lower leagues or disappear altogether. But if he is a gem, it's almost certain that he will need time and not to be pushed along too soon. Silvera's got something and I wouldn't be surprised if he starts showing it more regularly next season.

We all thought Hackney was going that way 18 months ago. Maybe Finch isn’t ready but at some point they have to be given a chance. Hopefully see him and one or two others in the remaining games, especially as the season is all but over now.

Interestingly enough, I noticed Ste Walker started for Whitby yesterday and Bradley Frewster was on the bench.

To be fair Finch is 3 years younger than Hackney. At still only 18 he's got plenty of time to still come through. I would also like to see him given a chance this season while the pressure is off a bit but if he isn't ready or isn't 100% fit which is being suggested by Carrick then I wouldn't be too concerned if it didn't happen for him till next season. I think next season is probably a big season for him as he needs to be getting first team football either with us or a decent level somewhere else on loan (League 1 or above).

The thing is with Hackney is that everyone thought he was ready to step up, apart from the manager.

I might be wrong but I would bet that Carrick will be much more closely aligned to the academy people and be persuaded by the consensus.

The point I’m making is that now there isn’t really much to play for it’s an ideal time to give lads like Finch a bit of game time. We already know Silvera isn’t a striker, and he wasn’t bought to play up front so why not give someone who is a striker by trade a chance

I'm not convinced by that. Carrick talks the talk but doesn't seem overly interested in walking the walk. That said, maybe the consensus is that none of the academy seniors are capable of making the step up. It kind of feels like we're skipping a generation in the academy. A lot will come down to whether Carrick is prepared to give Finch and maybe some others, more than 2-3 minutes at the end of a game between now and the end of the season.

Really, based on what evidence?

It's difficult to know, but I've only ever felt like he is really invested in developing young players, but clearly they need to have the talent for that to happen.

I think going forwards after the blackburn game, then yes, and I suspect we will get a couple of players getting game time

Academy grads to have played under Carrick - Cartwright, Coulson, Coburn, Fry, Hackney, Kavanagh, McCabe, Finch, Fry, Willis.

OK Fry, Coulson and Coburn were established first team squad already. But he kept Hackney in after a handful of games. He's given 5 others their debut. Young players often get a run when a season is in the death throws, like this one will be soon. Last year we weren't really able to do that because we had the play off race and a big squad.
