FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

I'll go early too.

1st. V derby, FA cup quarter final
2nd v Leicester in the final. The cup was hours for a few minutes at least.
3rd. Last goal v Liverpool on opening day of season to complete the hatrick.

What as signing, when we signed the white feather I said to my work colleague, unbelievable, even if it fails badly we cant knock the club for lacking ambition, didn't think it would end that bad though with being relegated

Anyway my 3 goals will be

1st - 8th March 1997 away to Derby in the FAC 6th round & finally we could relax, leading 1-0 via a Juninho wonder goal Ravanelle confirmed victory & a place in our 1st ever FAC SF when he smashed a last minute scorcher to make it 2-0

2nd - 6th April 1997 Our only wembley goal & 1st cup final goal, apart from the ASC, when Rav smashed what 'should' have been the winning goal

3rd - 23rd October 1996 Emerson playing the ball forward & Rav running on to the ball delicatly chipped the keeper, quality goal

1 His third goal against Liverpool, never thought we would of signed a striker like him.
2 Derby F.A. Cup.
3 Villa home, his first goal, superb finish with the outside of his foot.

1. The qf goal at Derby in March 1997. The importance was significant but it was also a magnificent strike from a ball that came across his body.

2. His header against Chesterfield in the semi final that made it 2-0 at Hillsborough

3. The extra time Wembley goal. The celebrations around Wembley at the time that had us dreaming for about 18 minutes.

All cup goals for me with the white feather...
(1) Leicester League Cup Final.....should have been the winner..😡
(2) Derby FA Cup Quarter Final....settled the nerves to put is in our historic first fa cup semi final
(3) Cup Semi-final at Old Trafford to pull it back to 2-1.....not a great goal, but an important one imho.

1. Leicester, Wembley final 06/04/97 For a few brief minutes, he gave us the dream, we were on our way, surely the curse was being lifted, 25 minutes to see out, we can do this, no more typical Boro................................
2. Derby FA Cup QF 08/03/97 Doing what he did best. Nerves, what nerves
3. Huddersfield Lge Cup 23/10/96 Emerson plays him through and the finish was bellissimo

Next player up is Robbie Mustoe 367 appearances and 31 goals (276 apps, 22 goals in league)

He is a club legend for me, signed from Oxford for under £400000 by Colin Todd and played in all of our ‘successful’ matches in the 90s. He signed at the same time as John Hendrie and people have said on previous days how good Todd’s signings were.

He stayed at The Boro for 12 years, and I don’t remember a hint of controversy about him – any managers dream player surely. After leaving us he went to Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday.

He now appears regularly on dodgy streams of premier league games (dodgy in UK anyway) as he and Robbie Earle seem to be main pundits for NBC Soccer(?)

I can’t tell my lasting story of him yet as it will give away one of my choices, but it involved being stood in a lake of urine (sorry for that picture)

MFC again provide the goals video clip, I am still working on them for day 10’s player but they don’t seem keen

So round 8 is over and we reach the penultimate round of this quiz.

As usual here are the words and videos of junos_boots:

I know you are playing golf - hope it was good. Here are Rav's results

Song Puff Daddy and Faith Evans – I’ll Be Missing You

The song list so far:

Paul Wilkinson - East 17, Stay Another Day
Paul Merson - Run DMC + Jason Nevins, Its Like That
Hamilton Ricard - Emma Bunton, What Took You So Long?
Juninho - McFly, Five Colours In Her Hair
John Hendrie - Michael Jackson, Earth Song
Mikkel Beck - Boy Zone, When The Going Gets Tough
Bernie Slaven - Take That featuring Lulu, Relight My Fire
Fabrizio Ravenelli - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, I’ll Be Missing You

The goals that I have gone for are as follows

We weren’t really hanging on in our last ever trip to Baseball Ground, but this goal meant that we couldn’t blow our first ever trip to an FA cup semi final. I think that this will be a popular choice as it wasn’t just the occasion but it was a very powerfully struck shot, from the left hand corner of the box that gave the Derby keeper no chance. You can see how much this game meant to me as both goals, topped their scorers chart.

1st – Mar 1997 v Derby https://youtu.be/4It-gw-spQg?t=66

The second goal would have walked the poll if not for H#*?*y – can’t even bring myself to type his name. Still our only goal at Wembley and for about 25 minutes I thought that we were finally going to bring a major trophy back to Middlesbrough. Just like the Derby goal, he didn’t half connect with it. I have to admit I watched the clip through to the end and my memory of the day is different to the sky coverage. I thought H*?#*y equalized with almost the last kick, but there was 3 minutes + injury time to go.

2nd – April 1997 v Leicester https://youtu.be/h9dLHFgUzNg?t=574

Finally I went for what I hoped at the time was the start of a goalscoring feat to beat Camsell – most hat tricks in a season (9 if you are interested – still stands for any club in league). His 3rd v Liverpool, only Kevin Campbell above him in leading scorers chart and we had signed the real thing. Nothing could go wrong from now on! So both teams that had a player score a hat trick on opening day were relegated that year.

3rd August 1996 v Liverpool (third goal) https://youtu.be/uY4W7QU_eo8?t=669

Other goals that I considered

The penalty against Villa, looked important at the time but I couldn’t bring myself to include penalties, as I said for Merson. Also at the time, I remember talking to mates at the match and we commented on how few Boro players actually celebrated with Rav, considering how important this goal looked to be– the rifts were very deep

https://youtu.be/EiK4U6BTZjU?t=210

His final goal it looked like it was possible that he and Merson might make a partnership, their celebration anyway – but he was gone after a shocking display v Stoke the week after and I for one wasn’t missing him.

https://youtu.be/ahOojFLWyUY?t=235

Now on to the league table. Two points separates the top 2. Two points also separates the bottom 3. So everything to play for in the final 2 rounds.

It's amazing how the memory plays tricks. I always thought Heskey committed a foul and the ball might have been out when Robins crossed it!

I think I was too busy booting those horrible, backless seats near the front at Wembley - I was obviously doing this for 3 minutes without realising it:cry:

Excellent song junos, love it

Robbie Mustoe, us certainly a Boro legend, I placed a thread the other day about him, the biggest compliment I can give him, which every manager chose him, is that no matter how much money Robbo had, or who he bought he never replaced Robbie

But what is the connection between songs and players?

Oky doky here we go.

1st Swindon - as an ex Oxford kad that would have made his day. Lovely chest down, dribble and shot.
2nd. I'll go Watford away. Driilred it
3rd. Wimbledon goal. I know it won't win, but any sentence that has stamp and delightful in there has to be in for novelty value

Think roger Thames sums it up - what a reward for an afternoon's work.

Claim to fame - his brother used to service our car when we lived in cartoon town (Carterton)

I am so pleased Juno you have included Robbie Mustoe in the competition. On first thoughts you wouldn't class him as a scorer of many goals but 31 goals over 12 seasons and its really a window on Boro's fortunes across a very momentous decade. If John Hickton was Mr Middlesbrough in the 1960's and 70's then Robbie Mustoe was Mr Middlesbrough in the 90s. No doubt about that.

Bought for £375,000 from Oxford United in July 1990 Robbie played in every season until he was sold to Charlton at the end of the 2001-2 season. He was as consistent a player as I can recall and got on with his job as a utility midfielder with the minimum of fuss and always the right attitude. A robust tackler, a great supporter of the attack with some brilliant goals coming from deep. Watching those goals over again brought back memories and he was especially key away from home where is ability to break up play and then be up with the break was key to many away win. He lost his place when Robbo first came but he quickly won it back again and then he was the first name on the team sheet in the early years at the Riverside. He had already had 4 good seasons at Oxford before we bough him as a 22 year old. He was highly thought of and Toddy once again saw the potential in a player from a rival 2nd tier club. His first season was the one that ended in that ill fated loss to Notts County in the play offs but in nearly every season he was with us Boro were either fighting for promotion or battling against relegation.

As before I have had to draw up a list of goals to choose from :-

His first league goal away County Ground Swindon 15/9/90 - a magnificent control turn and shot from the edge of the area

His 2nd goal in the League Cup at home to Newcastle 25/9/90. Rippers beats two men and lays it into the path of steaming Robbie from midfield who races into the area, rounds keep Scott and slots it home. From then on we loved him!

Swindon 2/2/2001 Home A spectacular goal taken first time that arrows into the top corner.

Watford H 7/3/95. In the Robbo promotion season at Ayresome Park this was a crucial win against Watford in March and Mustoe scores brilliant goal with a shot fully 30 yards out into the top corner.

Wimbledon Away 1/2/97. What move. Juninho bamboozles the Wimbledon defence with trickery. a 1-2 with Rav and then square to Robbie at the far post to equalise. Remember going mad at that goal. It was typical flamboyant Boro that season.

Sunderland A 28/9/97 - Great trickery from Emerson who powers past the left back. Cuts the ball inside to Merson who caresses on the volley to Robbie who pours in at the near post at the second time of asking

And its the final three in that list I go for

1. Wimbledon Away 1/2/97. What a move from our stars Juninho and Rav and Robbie applies the finish.

2. Sunderland A 28/9/97. Our first appearance at the SoL and we win. It was a Sunday lunchtime game and Emerson had already rocketed us ahead. This brilliant three man move finished Sunderland off. Merson's assist was sublime.

3. Watford 7/3/95 - This thunderbolt proving Robbie could hit the ball. Crucial goal in a crucial win as the age of Ayrsome came to an end.

And to sum Robbie up Gareth Southgate wrote in his book that Mustoe was “one of the most honest professionals in the Game”. And he was ours.
