FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

Sorry going to have post the new player a bit early today as I am having problems with my powerline adapters so going to have to reset my network - not sure how long it will take

Anyway the next player on the list is Bernie

Bernie Slaven 380 games, 146 goals (league 307, 118)

What a signing by Maddren in 1985. He was a great goal scorer who still seems to love being on Teesside. He had periods where fans would have a go at him for always being offside, but he definitely enjoyed putting the ball into the net.

He had the nickname ‘Wolfman’ and there were many very good fmttm cartoons based around our ‘hirsute’ hero.

A great Boro player, who I was very sorry to see leave. When I lived in Stoke, one of my colleagues was a huge Port Vale fan and she absolutely loved him as well.

He was around for only 8 years but to someone just coming up to school leaving age when he signed – he did seem to be here for much longer. He didn’t get n with Lennie Lawrence which has been well reported, but in Lennie’s promotion season he did score in six consecutive league games, a feat only three Boro players have ever beaten.

He still owns a piece of Ayresome Park perimeter fencing, but after watching the goals clip – he didn’t do the fence celebration nearly as often as people seem to remember.

Not all of his goals have been filmed, as until programmes such as ‘The Back Page’ in the early 1990s, cameras were not sent to every game. I think the first one on this clip show is Fulham – couldn’t find Bradford goal. I will say that the three I have picked out were thankfully available – so if it is not on the clip then it is not in my 123 (coincidentally). His televised 1980s goals could be in my 123 though.

All available goals courtesy of Middlesbrough FC Video Vault

1. Newcastle in Lge Cup, Nov 96 Great team Goal. Juninho joining in a funny celebration too.
2. WBA in Nov 97 superb chip to beat defender into the net after good team play
3. Forest Mar 97 Another superb team goal, whilst for Beck it was a tap in the beauty of the goal was excellent and without his excellent positioning to be in the right place at the right time would be for nought.

His positioning, movement and clinical finishing put him high in the most underrated Boro strikers league.
Love Juninho flying stunt with Beck, in that period he was World class
Juninho was named MOTM on sky & won a mountain bike from the sponsors, I have a photo of him cycling round the training ground on the bike 😁🚴

I have replied to this list that Spanishman put up last week as a reminder of who those goals on the clip were against - it might help (its on page 4 of this thread if you want the original)

The computer problem seems to have been solved by the old turn it off and back on again, which is good:giggle:

Spanishman will put updated results table and Beck's 123 when he has finished on golf course.

One of Lennie's biggest mistakes falling out with Bernie!
I loved Lennies time at the club but IMHO & along with McClaren with Juninho, Bernie was maybe a threat to Lennie in that he was seen as bigger than the boss himself

I think you are right as he shifted Mowbray soon into his managerial spell as well

I don't remember Bernie ever playing as a full back though, which I'm pretty sure what Hickton was brought in to be - or was our scouting team so good in the 60s that they had already spotted his centre forward potential?

John Hicktons debut was taking his 1st ever penalty, with penalty taker Ducky Rooks unavailable, when 2-0 down at home to Workington, 2 days after his 22nd birthday
He wore the No5 shirt & as you rightly say also wore the No2 shirt, even in the 1st division

Back home now. So I am just starting to process the results. Thanks to junos_boots for looking after things while I was playing some bad golf today.

The thing about golf is that you always have more bad rounds than good ones. You just have to put it behind you and look forward to the next time. It reminds me of supporting the Boro.
😁

I've never played a single game of golf in my life, my youngest brother has played for years & he says the same
He goes golfing, I go cycling ⛳🚴

Here we go. Context is everything. The chosen favourite goal is a very good one indeed. I can see why it is a favourite. Particularly given the team it was against.

I now have another person trying to intrude into my personal space at the bottom of the league table.

Here is what junos_boot has to say:

Song Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough

People have been close to connection, but no absolute correct answer yet.

This was hard as there were no goals that I could think of as really memorable. I have a feeling that there will be a very varied list of answers today

I have gone in this order

1st It was more of a team goal and the fact it was in the league cup against Newcastle. It was one of those special nights at the Riverside and even Shearer’s one arm in the air celebration couldn’t spoil it

https://youtu.be/U0owmvWWNlI?t=468

2nd It settled the nerves of the team, and despite the commentator calling it a scuffed finish, I thought that he had calmly lifted the ball over the Chesterfield keeper to set us on our way to a comfortable victory. I have always thought if Kinder hadn’t been a prat in the first meeting we would have beaten them comfortably at Old Trafford and then not been knackered at Hillsborough a few days later for the Leicester replay. This goal did cause a bottle of champagne (fizzy wine) to be opened in our back garden, as I couldn’t afford to go to this game due to the expense of the previous few weeks non season ticket matches costing me a fortune.

3rd His first Riverside start and a good goal - control, turn and shot all done very neatly. It was ‘only’ against Huddersfield, but it showed that we might have secured somebody who was going to help Ravenelli get the goals to see us have a successful season (oh well). It showed how far we had been transformed as we were taking apart a team that included Andy Payton, a centre forward who I was disappointed to see leave only three years before (he did make it 5-1 at the end).

Next up is Bernie.

No golf for me tomorrow. So I expect to be able to process the scores soon after the 12:00 noon UK time deadline tomorrow (1 June 2020).

Enjoy yourselves. My wife and I are off to a 4 person bbq at the house of our best friends here in Spain. I have a feeling my head might hurt tomorrow morning.

Again Huddersfield I had & changed for the Leicester goal, good choices too 👌

With Beck I must admit to being surprised at the fact that so many people agreed. None of his goals would have made a goal of the month competition. The night against the geordies was a good one though as were many in those cup runs.
