Female Premier League referee - Rebecca Welch

Good luck to her!

Fulham v Burnley - 23rd December
I saw it reported that she's reffed 1 game in League 2, 2 in League 1 & 4 in the Championship before getting her first game in the PL. Is that the usual rise to the top?

For some reason I thought refs were like clubs & had to spend a year at each level before getting promoted ... although now I've typed that the cogs are turning & I think there has been talk of an accelerated programme to try & encourage ex-players to ref'/so the best refs have longer at the top.

It's definitely an accelerated timetable, but she regularly refs in the WSL too.
Which you can question the comparative standards of, but it's a professional League.

I mean, let’s not pretend that they’re not desperate to get a lass refereeing in the PL. Of course they are, but if she’s genuinely good enough that’s fine with me. It’s not like the blokes currently doing it are all getting everything right.

Yea. I saw something on twitter along those lines. Suggested she should do a year in the champo before the premier league gig, which sounds reasonable. I'm not sure about the stats on the black referee being promoted but I think he too may have a low level of mens professional games behind him too.
Not sure how some of the other more long standing refs in the lower leagues feel about this.

They’ll probably feel aggrieved, but the counter argument will be that black and female referees have been aggrieved for a long time too.

Until we have a perfect world, in every industry, there’ll always be someone whose a bit naffed off.

She gave a penalty against me, for handball, in an FA Cup qualifier about 10 years ago. The resulting goal knocked us out.

Sat with her after the game and got the laws out, which stated handball had to be deliberate. I asked her if she thought it was deliberate, she said ‘no but it stopped the cross going in’. I find it hard to see her as any good after that 😆

That's not accurate. In the last 12 months alone, she refereed 6 Championship games, 10 League One games and 5 League Two games.

Rebecca Welch stats on SportsMole

Also, she started refereeing men's games in League 2 back in 2021 so she's obviously refereed more men's league games than just the ones listed above for the last 12 months.

I don't see what gender has to do with refereeing really? It's not as if it can be a fitness or speed argument.

As said above, the fact that Keith Stroud is employed shows that literally anyone can be a ref.

Referees aren't automatically promoted to a higher leagues just because of the number of games they've done.

It's based on a number of factors, including the level of their abilities, referee observer's marks, whether they've shown that have the rights skills, attitude and temperament, etc.

If she’s good enough , why hasn’t she been given the Liverpool v Man U game?

When you said "got the laws out" i thought that was a euphemism ?
