Feels like we’re preparing for an International Tournament

The way Carrick setup last night with the changes being made, squad players getting game time and the key players getting rested, even how he spoke after the game saying it changes nothing for us, we know where we are and we’ve learnt from this etc.

Two more games coming up, it just reminds me of when England player friendlies before a Euros or World Cup and play a smaller team (Rotherham) and then one on a similar level (Coventry).

The commentators spoke last night about how it was Southgate who recommended Carrick to Gibson. I wonder if he’s been in touch about how to prepare for something like this?

I was thinking this last night. its almost like pre-season and the next 2 games being friendlies where we can try a few things and get the whole squad up to speed.

It's amazing we have gone nearly the whole season without any injuries and had a relatively settled team and it comes to the crunch and we get them all at once.

I think looking at that team last night we really need a mcgree or ramsey to be fit for some legs, inspiration/craft in the middle.

Was refreshing to see a number of changes yesterday, forward thinking. If we got pasted 3-0 it would have backfired, morale drops, we would have feared them in the play offs etc but we came away with a defeat thinking if we had them with our first XI we'd get the better of them.

I hope he contiues this and makes a few more changes for Rotherham, i'd like to see one of the young kids start, Bola nowhere near the opposition box and give Lenihan a rest if possible.

Against Rotherham we'd have to be careful not to get charged with fielding a weakened team, if they are still not clear of relegation. I'm sure Mr Warnock for one will be keeping an eye on us.

It’s refreshing that he’s doing it his way and doesn’t care what others think.

Brilliant leaving Chuba out of that mess last night

I felt it was mind games. We gave them a good game, with a half-strength team. We almost got a point, but for a dodgy penalty. They have no psychological advantage over us , despite the narrow victory.

Had we won last night, we'd have had been able to say our second XI beat them. Had they beaten our first XI though, that could have been a blow. Had our first XI beaten them, we may have taken too much from it, as we did v Norwich in 2015 and Leicester in 1997.

There's been a lot of talk from both sets of fans after last night's game. Mind games, momentum, mentality etc etc.

I have confidence in Carrick that he will be keeping the squad away from all this and just focusing on the task ahead.

I agree. And I think we've come away from that game holding the Ace's.

They played their best 11. We fielded our 2nd string (effectively). We played them off the park. And on another day, they don't get that penalty. Plus put those chances for Crooks, on Akpom's toes, and the game is completely different.

Carrick definitely played a psychological battle last night and came away with more information about them, than they did about us.

Plus, we didn't give them opportunity to crock our star player like we did Norwich in 2015.

I sincerely hope not

We don't just have one star player or match winner like we did with Bamford back then.
Akpom is brilliant, lethal in this league. But so too is Archer.
Ramsey and Forss are match winners too.
We have goals from everywhere.
Indeed, ok top scorer then.

I would argue that Tomlin was also a match winner.

Did you hear him on Talksport, saying he categorically did not report anyone to the FA but he just wished teams did it against him.

I think one reason we’ve been ok with injuries is the way we play……letting the ball do the work short little passes and having the opposition doing the running around.

What's the point in having a squad if you can't use it as you see fit? I struggle to see the sense in the complaints about Burnley even though they had next to nothing to prepare for, but if we're preparing/gearing up for the playoffs then I'd see rotation as 100% valid.
I won't be faxing my argument to the EFL though.
