Favourite jazz albums/artists

It needed doing tbf.

Any excuse to re-post this great sound and footage. The whole festival is worth a watch,I enjoy the shots of the audience. utb

Thats a great watch, also on the iplayer is:
Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool
Blue Note Records - Beyond the Notes

I'm only a dabbler in jazz but thought these were superb programs. Some great music to pick up on included.
The Blue Note doc is definitely worth a watch agreed - some great characters in it.

I'd love a coffee table book of all those iconic early Blue Note album covers

Bit steep that for me unfortunately.

There's loads of images on line. Sadly I did start collecting them with the intention of some kind of FB post but never got round to it.

Some great stuff on line for Blue Note though.

If I was to have to chose one classic album, it would be Chet Baker Sings, which is absolutely amazing.

Then I'd go to some of the classics like Kind of Blue (Miles Davis), A Love Supreme (Coltrane), Birth of the Cool, (Miles Davis) Moanin (Art Blakey), John Coltrane & Thelonious Monk at Carnegie Hall, Headhunters (Herbie Hanock), Bitches Brew (Davis) & Somethin Else (Cannonball Adderley).
Pretty much nails it as a start point. Kind of Blue is the first jazz album I bought after hearing it in being played in "The Vinyl Cafe" Wroclaw.
Chet Baker Sings was the second one I bought after hearing it being played in Windows Newcastle.
I would also add Blue Train (John Coltrane) and Ella and Louis

There is really nice new album by Jo Harrop (Weathering the Storm). Very mellow. Jo has a fantastic voice and is from the North East. (Although based in that there London now). I saw her at The Jazz Cafe in Newcastle once and I've seen her at the Sage a couple of times doing the "Very Jazzy Christmas" show. Well wort a listen.

One of my favourites that you may like is 'I Heard You Twice The First Time' by Branford Marsalis. They are mainly playing blues numbers so it isn't the impenetrable jazz that puts a lot of people off.

At the moment mainly trios

Sam Yahel Yaya 3: plus two other of his albums
Keith Jarrett. Live in Norway
John Scofield Trio Live.. En Route
Brad Mehldau Trio various albums
Ernest Ranglin Below the Bassline
Gary Peacock and Bill Frisell. Just So Happens
Bill Frisell Trio Valentine
Thomas Stanko. Suspended Night.

Some stuff that's always nearby including
Wayne Shorter....Speak No Evil.

Some great recommendations and gives me heaps to work through my way through. Thanks! Also, ill check out some of the suggested documentaries..

I've actually been listening to this one lately. It really is great. Isn't there a Chet Baker movie or documentary? I seem to remember Marc Maron mentioning it on his podcast one day.

Boros about to kick-off. Thanks again everyone.
