Fan-Led Government Review of Football

This has pushed through because of the Super League under former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch - and the remit is to communicate with FSA and fan bodies up and down the country.
Judging by comments within the other Premier League clubs they are still furious about the six going behind their backs and are closing doors on those clubs in commitees etc so they cannot dictate any policies.
It could be that because of the Super League we have an opportunity for independent regulation of football and that things will start to roll back in favour of fans and the pyramid.
Obviously this is all talk at this point but the greedy six have disgusted so many, former football allies included that there is a real will to clip their wings to prevent them ever having so much power again.
This is the first time I can ever recall the fans leading on a review of the game.
It looks like everyone from government, to Premier League are in the mood to take action. Let's hope we can start to reclaim our game.

I have actually just answered a pre-poll from the Telegraph sport - as in a questionnaire before the fan-led review comes to our town.

Premier League Statement

03 May 2021
The events of the last two weeks have challenged the foundations and resolve of English football. The Premier League has prepared a series of measures to enshrine the core principles of the professional game: an open pyramid, progression through sporting merit and the highest standards of sporting integrity. These measures are designed to stop the threat of breakaway leagues in the future.

Opposition to the proposed Super League united the whole of football, with the fans’ voice clearly heard. The Premier League recognises the strength of feeling and the right of fans to know what is happening. We are committed to maintaining close dialogue with supporters and their representatives, as we work with The FA and Government to identify solutions, but ask that all protests are peaceful. The actions of a minority of those present at Old Trafford on Sunday have no justification and will be investigated by the Premier League and The FA as well as by the Greater Manchester Police.

The actions of a few clubs cannot be allowed to create such division and disruption. We are determined to establish the truth of what happened and hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions. We and The FA are pursuing these objectives quickly and appropriately, consulting with fans and Government.

In addition, the Premier League, supported by The FA, is taking the following actions to protect our game, our clubs and their fans from further disruption and uncertainty:

Additional rules and regulation to ensure the principles of the Premier League and open competition are protected

A new Owners’ Charter that all club owners will be required to sign up to, committing them to the core principles of the Premier League

Breaches of these rules and the Charter will be subject to significant sanctions

We are enlisting the support of Government to bring in appropriate legislation to protect football’s open pyramid, principles of sporting merit and the integrity of the football community

We will work with the fan groups, Government, UEFA, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA to defend the integrity and future prospects of English Football.

FA STATEMENT:

Please find a statement below, which is for immediate release, from The FA:

FA Spokesperson: "Since we became aware of the European Super League our priority and focus has been on preventing it from happening, both now and in the future.

"Throughout this period, we have been in ongoing discussions with the Government, the Premier League and UEFA. In particular, we have been discussing legislation with Government that would allow us to prevent any similar threat in the future so that we can protect the English football pyramid.

"Last week, we started an official inquiry into the formation of the European Super League and the involvement of the six English clubs. We wrote to all of the clubs to formally request all relevant information and evidence regarding their participation. Once we have the required information, we will consider what appropriate steps to take. Clearly what happened was unacceptable and could have caused great harm to clubs at every level of English football.

"The fans have played a vital and impactful role in helping to stop the European Super League from happening, and we understand their frustrations. However, we cannot condone the violent and criminal behaviour that took place before the scheduled Manchester United vs Liverpool match, which The FA is now investigating."

END-

The rest of Premier League sound like they are furious. Clubs like Everton feel that they could have been sold down their river with their new stadium and ruined by the deception. They are appealing for legislation to prevent any possible repeats. Not just changing their own rules but also the law.
I think we will see an independent regulator and I think they will be considering football as a whole and fans.
The Prime Minister met FSA this week and Kier Starmer also met FSA. Tracey Crouch is set to talk to lots of fan groups in this fan-led review. Fans that are absolutely at boiling point.
It is hard to trust anyone and the Premier are still not talking strongly enough in terms of governance in football clubs etc but it sounds like there will be a lot of regulations now to defend the pyramid, the grass roots, the supporters and stop dodgy owners taking football clubs and supporters for a ride. This time there is hope I think.

Significant sanctions probably means a £10 fine.

It should be automatic expulsion from the league if they ever try it again, no exceptions.

Disbanding the Premier League should be the first step. Then start talking about dividing funds more equally. We should be looking at the same promotion/relegation throughout the pyramid, 4 up and 4 down. Automatic relegation for going into debt.

They took 2 days to capitulate after years of breakaway threats. Just 2 days. So, yes I think they might just be on the back foot at present.

That is precisely what the Premier League and FA are calling for government legislation to protect the sanctity of the football pyramid and to prevent a break away - in addition they are talking about bolstering their own rules with big penalty clauses.

It was the FA that started the ball rolling with the introduction of the Premier League to appease the same clubs. The penalty is 30 years late.

Why do the Premier League & the FA expect the Govt to introduce legislation to safeguard what is in effect a privately ran business (all be it a very unique one) just because they can't do it themselves?

And every time the Big 6 have cried for a bigger share of the pot those in charge have rolled over and given it to them.

IMO, clubs should be give a status similar to listed buildings. Sure, owners are free to own them but can't do whatever they want.

The FSA have worked up s formula where owners are custodians and in the fit and proper test there is recognition that a club is community as well as commercial. And that owners would be tested and have to meet the criteria annually.
