Families across Middlesbrough are invited to a family fun day with a difference at Hemlington Lake.

The free event on Saturday (August 14) is centred on a community-focused litter pick to help keep the lakeside tidy as part of the Keep Boro Tidy project.

All ages are welcome and the litter pick will begin at the entrance closest to the Hemlington Recreation Centre and will take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Anyone wanting to get involved can take along some lunch and a picnic blanket, and an ice cream van and drinks trailer will provide extra refreshments.

Cleveland Police will be attending the event with an information gazebo and a chance for visitors to get up close to a police van.

There's also a chance to get up close to one of Cleveland Fire Brigade's fire engines and meet firefighters from the local station.

Staff from Middlesbrough Council, along with Community Champions Middlesbrough, will be issuing litter pick equipment throughout the event and mini litter picks for children will be available.

Mayor Andy Preston said: "Hemlington Lake is a truly beautiful part of the town, and amazing events like this help to keep it that way.

"Businesses, residents and community groups have really got on board with the idea of the Keep Boro Tidy project and it's really starting to make a difference to the local environment.

"It's all about the local community taking some ownership and tidying up small areas near where they live and work - places that they know might be a regular hotspot for litter or could do with just a bit of sprucing up.

"I'd love to see as many residents as possible at the family fun day - we'll be joined by Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Brigade who are also carrying out excellent work to tackle environmental issues across Middlesbrough."

Community Champions Middlesbrough spokesperson Adrian Walker said: "The team at Boro Champs love where we live and are keen for more like-minded people and families to join in with regular litter picks.

"This family-friendly event at Hemlington Lake offers an opportunity for us to showcase the work we do to help keep the town tidy and hopefully we can welcome more members to join our group or it will inspire them to take up their own activities.

"We can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so please follow our pages."

If you would like to take part in the family fun day litter pick please email cleanup@middlesbrough.gov.uk so staff can determine numbers for equipment.

Keep Boro Tidy was launched earlier this year by Middlesbrough Council with the aim of encouraging more residents to take up their own ‘tidy-up' activities in a bid to build on the existing efforts of the council and local community groups.

With support from the council, residents can organise their own mini litter picks in their street or around their local school, tidy grass verges and even give a lick of paint to their local park bench.

Similar schemes in other towns and cities have been successful in reducing litter and have helped to improve habitats and eco-systems.

Regular litter picks also take place at the Community Hubs and anyone can take part:

  • Easterside Hub - Saturday, August 7, then fortnightly on a Saturday, 10am to 11:30am
  • Grove Hill Hub - last Wednesday of every month, 10am to 11.30am
  • Newport Hub - Thursday, September 9, then every six weeks on a Thursday, 1pm to 2pm
  • Thorntree Hub - Tuesday, September 7, then every six weeks on a Tuesday, 10am to 12pm
  • North Ormesby - Thursday, September 9, then every six weeks on a Thursday, 1pm to 3pm

As long as they fish the Tesco trolleys out the lake first , it will be easier to cart it all back to the skips.
Followed by more fun chucking fire works and eggs at the nearby Fire service.

It's better now than you might imagine tbh.

It's not too bad around the lake however there are still ferking idiots littering as they go, you can't educate stupid. The lake itself is clean and well stocked and the swans are doing well.

From what I remember growing up near Hemlington lake, it will take more than 2 hours to litter pick😁
Funnily enough I went there for an organised litter pick early in the summer and it was almost spotless - I had to go off into the streets to find litter. It seems our Community Champions had been beaten to it by another organised litter pick - they obviously worked really hard as there was barely even a discarded crisp packet around the lake.

I remember back in the 80s when there was a mink on the loose around the lake.
You would think a tiger was on the prowl.

Several hunting parties were organised to track it down and capture it.
A local man wanted the lake closed and the whole area cordoned off, but the local council refused as Chubby Brown was due to play at the social club in the near future and that couldn't be jeopardised.

Anyway, it got quite late so everyone went home.
