Family firm of Rishi Sunak's non-dom status wife won £50m in taxpayer-funded deals

Conflicts of interests in government procurement have been replaced with merely a coincidence.

Nope, nothing dodgy at all that I'm sure every other company would be allowed to do without being sued left, right and centre.

I’m shocked by this news

As I didn’t even know she owned a pub let alone lived next to Matt Hancock

This non dom status is frankly an abuse. A legal tax dodge and right at the very heart of government. As Starmer said sheer hypocrisy. She is living at the heart of Westminster in a taxpayer funded flat but wont commit to being a UK citizen and pays £30k a year to keep that status. Unbelievable, however non dom status is something the Labour Party must have been aware of whenever they have been in power and done nothing to address it, which begs the question why not.

As disgraceful as this is of Sunak and his Mrs, it is lawful. The law needs changing and Labour must pledge to do so. Calling them out is not enough. I want to see this pledged in their next manifesto to fix it otherwise the Labour party are being hypocritical too.

What a shower of vampires we have as our government.

There is nothing wrong in the principle of non-dom. If someone is living here temporarily and paying taxes in their home country then it is fine. Probably just needs tightening up a bit and applying done stricter definitions. Abusing the system is the problem. This could be easily solved by hiring more investigators. She would be found to be domiciled if she was actually investigated. Also, big fine or prison sentences for what in reality is tax evasion.

Labour have had it in the manifesto, people preferred the manifesto of a habitual liar

I suppose the continued abuse of power by the Tories, the rich and the establishment serves as a template for what needs reforming.

Now it is claimed Sunak himself had a green card during his first year as chancellor

Holders of a US green card are required to pay US tax on their worldwide income, and to pledge the US is their forever home.

Things could go from bad to worse for the chancellor after it was revealed that he himself could have held permanent residency status in another country during his first year as chancellor.

According to Sky News reports, Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murthy, held green cards in the US until more than a year into his chancellorship – before then giving it up during his period at the Treasury.

Holders of a US green card are required to pay US tax on their worldwide income, and to pledge the US is their forever home.

The US government website says the card is only for people who “make the US your permanent home” – which would be odd for someone holding multiple jobs in government, including local government minister, chief secretary to the Treasury, and chancellor.

A source close to Mr Sunak said “neither of them have green cards”, but refused to answer questions over whether they had them during any of his period as chancellor.

My analysis on Rishi Sunak’s woes – and whether things might get worse

Did he have a US Green Card – declaring himself “permanent US resident” – during his first year as Chancellor?

No denial tonight from Treasury, who only say he doesn’t have one nowhttps://t.co/3pGJJhZ6Wk pic.twitter.com/mcnGlpLh4t

Done “nothing wrong”

The Chancellor has come out swinging today over his wife’s non-domiciled status.

Sunak said his spouse – who is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds – had done nothing wrong in choosing a financial arrangement that means she is not legally obliged to pay tax in Britain on foreign income.

The point is that it needs to be pledged in their next one as when Labour has been in power nobody did anything about it. At least Starmer and his shadow cabinet members are calling Sunak out, but he must pledge to amend or scrap it. As for the last election, it wasn’t an issue made high on anyones agenda. McDonnell mentioned it but Labour failed to capture the imagination and debunk the tory rhetoric on a whole host of important matters, the labour leadership was frankly weak and dithery in 2019. I know you disagree with me, which is fine.

Labour pledged to scrap it at the 2015 General Election.

Starmer would do well to let Ed Miliband take the lead on this.

Maybe Labour have some non doms too?

The philosophy under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown was the UK was open for wealthy people to come to and live in a very low tax zone. I believe they though the new arrivals would spend a lot of money here and this money would trickle down. It has in the London property market, but there is no evidence of trickle down in places like Middlesbrough. In general a failed policy for me.

Apologise for The Scum link.

Sunak has spoke to his client journalists, it's a smear by Labour and possibly because people don't want an Indian woman living in Downing Street.

He's done as far as his leadership aspirations are concerned, he can't comeback from this.

Nobody's rushing to defend him. Johnson, Patel, Raab and Truss all silent.

She should f off back to India then. I had a green card in the US and had to pay income tax there. In fact, I had to relinquish my permanent resident status so that I no longer had to pay US income tax when I came back to the UK.

Turns out his wife ‘loves India’ so much she had a green card for USA too,
So did our Rishi - whilst he was chancellor.

Nothing will happen, of course but I’m old enough to remember Prescott being slaughtered for having two Jags.
