Face masks

I always go back to Hong Kong - and my brother in Hong Kong asking me if I had any face masks back at the start of February. They wore them throughout and have come out the other side with only 4 deaths still. They have confidence to go out to beaches, full restaurants and bars. Where else in the world would that be the case I wonder?
But also they had no flu outbreak at all this year - and the reason seems to be because everyone was washing hands constantly and wearing face masks.
What do they do with used masks Rob?

They wear masks in China too but it didn't seem to make that much difference. Perhaps there would have been far more deaths.

The following is from a study published in June.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7323223/

"Thus, a pre‐symptomatic or mildly infected person wearing a facemask for hours without changing it and without washing hands every time they touched the mask could paradoxically increase the risk of infecting others. Because the USA is in a desperate situation, their Centers for Disease Control has recommended the public wear homemade cloth masks. This was essentially done in an effort to try and reduce community transmission, especially from people who may not perceive themselves to be symptomatic, rather than to protect the wearer, although the evidence for this is scant. In contrast, the World Health Organization currently recommends against the public routinely wearing facemasks"

Masks may make some difference (according to the study there's limited evidence), but it isn't just about wearing masks. Countries with less deaths typically stopped travel early enough to make a difference. Taiwan was one of the first to shut down international travel. They do have a mandatory mask policy on public transport but the quarantine rules on international travel and the rapid test and trace are more likely reasons for the low spread.

I should add that I wear a mask in public buildings and have no objection to doing so. But make it mandatory and you invite disobedience from the fiercely independent. 25 years trying to get people to do stuff tells me that voluntary observance is more effective. Especially if you can get enough compliance from the generally willing to make it the norm. And provided you have a supply of masks.
Any excuse to bash China br14 - even if you have to make stuff up!

It's selfish not to were one. On site and in the offices we all have to wear one now at work. It's not pleasant when the temperature is mid to high 30s but if it helps stop the spread then great. My colleague is in hospital despite these measure but we all know it's the right thing to do.
Sorry to hear about your colleague Jonny. How old is he? I'm not aware of many posters being affected by Covid19. I personally don't know anyone affected - not that that proves anything. We do need proper guidance about mask wearing, the affordable availability and the proper safe and environmentally friendly disposal of masks.

Thats why there needs to be a rule. I reckon a lot of people are like you and just don't wear one because they don't HAVE to.
I sort of agree with that... i personally dont think I need to wear one as I dont think I've got the disease but I understand the problem is many are asymptomatic and transmitting it... I've followed the social distancing where possible and wash hands regularly...

Exactly you don't actually know if you have the disease. That's why it definitely need mandating. I feel perfectly fine, but certainly wear my make just in case.

I am just not getting the contradictory stance, for weeks now, there has been orderly queue’s outside my local Tesco but for some reason this weekend, no queue required, people getting waved straight in and the 2m markings outside gone, then come back to the messages about trying to make face masks compulsory???

Interestingly, while masks are compulsory on public transport Stockton Council have told taxi drivers they aren’t classed as public transport, so don’t have to wear one. The taxi driver I spoke to said he would wear one if the punter requested it, but otherwise doesn’t.

Why didn't we see mandatory mask use as soon as the lockdown was announced?

'Because it won't happen to me syndrome' And the Government were weak and failed to address the situation quicker and still haven't. I visit 2 large Companies daily and they are compulsory plus temperature checks.

Totally agree with you. The British spirit or just stupidity. A minority take the slightest glimmer of normality and go to Town on it. It will come back and bite our asses. Two Pubs in Stockton have had to deep clean already.

It isn’t a contradictory stance. The government are giving advice that is vague and dangerous. The rest of the world has proven masks help

That is probably true ST but if its not contradictory it is certainly muddled. Gove on the Marr show says there is no need to make wearing face masks mandatory in shops

Just 2 days ago Johnson said “I do think we need to be stricter about insisting people wear face coverings in confined spaces”

🤷‍♂️

Government advice is always carefully muddled these days. That’s why people can be sacked for breaking lockdown rules and others defended being dignity for breaking the same rules. It’s a deliberate plan by the government say they can blame everyone else for their own failures.
