Exchange Square

Spensleys has just reopened. Cornerhouse site is currently being renovated - scaffolding has gone up on the outside.

Several years old this pic now - the world has changed a lot since this was envisaged.

Never made clear what the usage was in the arched window displays, wether a major retailer was moving in or individual outlets using them but either way a change of plan required now.

Be good if this area could be redeveloped alongside the Zetland pub which is doing great food but is sadly the only venue down there capable of attracting people to the area.

I don't know Boro nightlife very well but there was deffo a pizza place under the bridge...and I remember because on one of my rare nights out in Boro we went in for a pizza...and binned them after 1 bite when a rat ran right through the place, the people working there threw a box over it and took it out...suggested this wasn't a one off as there was no panic bu them at all...just the paying customers 🤢🤢

The pizza place was further down… Pizza 2000

I was an expert on 2am pizzas in Boro 😂
Pizza 2000 was different and on the main strip of shops, street view shows the pizza shop sign but bar fresco was opposite side

Pizza 2000 around the corner from there to the left of the bar fresco door facing towards the high street I believe

Did anybody else hear the story that they were going to fill the entire Cornerhouse with cement?
I think that was actually in the Gazette. It was when the railway station defects were much worse than was believed and they didn't have a ready plan for stopping the whole lot collapsing.

It would be good if it was partitioned up into a couple of retail outlets - the sort of thing you get at other train stations… a small M&S, a coffee shop etc

Or just a Wetherspoons 😂

Bar Fresco became a Pizza shop. Malones it was called going by the sign. What a dump the old Wickers World building is over the road as well. That area of town was buzzing when i started drinking down there.

Bar Fresco did not become a pizza shop!

I always remember it being hit and miss whether Bar Fresco was open or not in the early 2000's. I remember being out on a Monday or Tuesday and it'd be open, back out on a Friday and it'd be closed. We'd always head over that way for £2.50 trebles and then head over to the Royal Exchange before going down to Jumpin' Jacks. It was so much better for a night out than it is now.

The renovation round there is badly needed so this is certainly welcome and hopefully it'll lead to a nicer walk down to the Riverside on a matchday. Whichever way you walk at the moment seems to be full of derelict buildings or graffiti everywhere.

It's funny that a thread that started with details of a pedestrianised public square which hopefully expands and is good for people to use turns into a thread remeniscing (sp?) about night clubs & pizza joints. :)

The problem that a pedestrianised square has is that it is surrounded by nightclubs on Albert Road and towards the underpass although I guess the square won't be in much demand on a night time but it'll be a shame if the square is just covered in the deterius of the night club crew every morning. ie Glasses/bottles, pizza boxes, puke & hopefully nothing worse.

This sign would suggest there was a Malones pizza shop there at some point.

As above I think this may have been old, if you look at streetview the earliest map of that area on streetview is 2009 which then shows the Bar Fresco livery which even then was long since closed down

if you then move it to any other date in the future all that has been taken down and it shows the knackered old malones livery, which seems to wrap all the way around. I don't remember a pizza shop that big there to be honest at any time but guess there must have been at some point
