Eurovision Song Contest Final

I would strongly question your sanctions comment. Where are you getting that info from?

There's a list of many of the current sanctions against Russia.

You'll notice that the UK is quite prominent in many of the listed sanctions.

What reason do you have to strongly question it?

The USA is comfortably the biggest supplier of aid and has imposed the strongest sanctions, but that's to be expected when you consider the size of its economy and population, and its own huge oil and gas reserves.

Based on the Euro voting Europe certainly seems to think we’re doing a damn sight more to support Ukraine than Germany and France who both got the lowest votes despite their songs deserving more.

I think the world knows what vital role the government have done in supporting Ukraine, as proved with the voting system, if people refuse to blindly ignore what we have done through their hate for the one reason that is Boris is their problem

Congratulations Ukraine, any glimmer of happiness that country gets it deserves

What's won us so many votes this year is our governments continual vocal support against the poisonous Russian, IMHO mind
I have to take slight issue with your suggestion we did so well because of our aid to Ukraine.

The voting this year taking Ukraine out of the equation was less political than I’ve seen it. The reason we did so well was that the juries panels assessed our song and performance the best. Sam Ryder did a magnificent job not only performing the song on stage he spent the previous month being a tremendous ambassador for the song and the competition, touring Eurovision zone. His infectious personality and how he sold the song was a huge reason we did so well.

Your point in popularity is weakened by the fact we finished 5th in the popular vote, not 2nd beaten by Serbia, Spain, Moldova and of course Ukraine who all had great performances. Germany’s song was relatively tame.

In a long winded way what I am saying it was all about Sam Ryder and not some popularity vote on the UK.

It doesn't list the sanctions though does it. Its my belief the EU have since much more. They certainly acted quicker

It literally does list the sanctions?
That's exactly what it is.
It's a list of sanctions taken against Russia.

The EU certainly hasn't acted quicker because of individual member states continuously disrupting proposed sanctions.

Even now they've still not agreed to an oil and gas ban because of Hungary's objections.
Individual countries within the EU have taken stronger and more decisive action, but as a whole it's been held up.

I'm not particularly interested in a ******* contest on it though, every sanction taken weakens Russia and aids Ukraine, whichever country or organisation imposes it.
Many of the sanctions have been agreed between nations as well, it's a joint effort, not a game of one-upmanship.

But it's just daft to try pretend that the UK isn't a leading figure in the global opposition to the invasion, it's well documented.

Thats fine zoo, but we'll have agree to disagree, without taking anything away from Sam Ryder

The Moldovan band (Zdob si Zdob) also appeared in 2011 with an absolute banger ("So Lucky"), which if you remember featured a lot of pointy hatted ska-punkers with a lass on a unicycle playing the oboe. So many euphemisms, so little time.

Also this year's Georgian entry was superb (band is Circus Mircus) who fell at the semi stage. Haven't we all. Check those out too, should have been a contender but probably too quirky-indie for the audience (think Young Knives for a UK equivalent).

I think you are taking it away from him though. 12 million TikTok followers and a bluddy great performance are what took him to the top of the leader board, it was solidarity and politics that knocked him off it.
Im not taking anything away from him, to come 2nd after all the poor performance placings we've had over numer, I justcsee it as each voter is, seeing us in a more favourable country & IMHO its down to our government & a big chunk to Sam Ryder

Down to our government? No, we're a laughing stock, mate, they just pity us now. The real reason is the song is quality and the lad's a social media icon.

Im my opinion the reason why UK did so well was 100% because of the man, the song and the performance and nothing to do with any kind of political bias in the past holding back your entries. The UK entries this century have been abysmal, I mean truly dire apart from Jade Ewen in 2009 who finished a very creditable 5th and Jessica Garlick who finished 3rd in 2002. If then you are still of the belief that Johnson's Government can take some credit then you are also endorsing Tony Blair's Government in 2002 and Gordon Brown's Government in 2009. Of course it would be a nonsense to say that.

Taking nothing away for Sam Ryder, with a cracking performance & song, the modern Jimmy Somerville, but I standby what I think

I say it as I see it, all about opinions, not asking people to agree with me, thats up to you to decide

I am not Erimus but at the same time you can't stop people challenging your opinion either.

Must admit until I read this thread just now that I never for a second connected Johnson having a ‘good war’ against his old friends and funders the Russians with our winning performance in the Eurovision (Ukraine didn’t really win it, just a big public support vote from ordinary European people to ordinary Ukrainians).

I just think it was a top song and performance which showed that the vote isn’t overly political and they will recognise a top UK entry if we can bother our backsides to put one in.
