EU Commission silent as Germany buys own vaccines

The European Commission has refused to comment on whether Germany has breached EU agreements by securing additional vaccine doses for its own citizens under a bilateral agreement.

German health minister Jens Spahn said earlier this week that his country had signed a memorandum of understanding with BioNTech last September for 30 million additional vaccine doses - a decision which seems to put at risk the principle of solidarity between European countries.

In his statement, he revealed that the German deal was sealed two months before the EU commission finalised the EU-wide contracts with the Pfizer and BioNTech in November, in what appears to be also in a breach of EU agreements which prohibit member states from negotiating separate deals.

I thought more would have been made of this
Why?

Each country no matter what group or agreement they have signed up to if they are using their own money should be allowed to but any extra vaccines with it to look after their own people.

But under EU rules they can't.

It's rhetoric like this that is not only incorrect, but was used to to moblilise millions of people to vote against their own interests. Clearly you don't have an issue peddling the same nonsense though.
Some people are just gullible enough to fall for it. Sadly for this country there are many of such people

We are out of the European Union so we are not in a position to influence decisions.
But we have "Sovereignty" and we`ve "taken back control"(n)

Except it's not nonsense at all. Read up on it. There are plenty of articles about it (The Economist etc), about how Germany are basically running the EU - whether they want to or not.

Germany is the most influencial country within the European Union. They have the largest economy, the largest population, the largest amount of seats in the parliament, the largest contribution to the EU treasury, etc. and now the Presidency of the EU Commission herself (Mrs von der Leyen).

Add to that the whole leadership during the euro crisis and bailouts of countries affected it's hardy surprising.

He who pays the piper.............

Actually I would counter that view that it was also a lack of at accepting that there are are flaws and issues within the EU that led to this dogmatic approach of black and white polarisation over the issue.
That article is from an EU based news site specialising in EU stories, not some eurosceptic rant site and not sensationalist and it even has quotes attributed to proves it accuracy.

and yet you dismiss it as as anti Eu brexit propaganda when it’s the exact opposite.

the lack of any form of reasoned debate on both sides is why the brexit vote was so deeply flawed.
