England Team for World Cup?

My view is that it is time to be brave and stop playing an extra centre back because you don't trust them. Aside from the fact this will give us an extra man in midfield and help us keep the ball, thereby taking pressure off the defence, we also have few players currently playing in a back 5.

TAA, Trippier and White are all playing right back in a 4 for their clubs.
Shaw is playing left back in a 4 for Man Utd.
Stones, Coady and Maguire play in a 4 for their clubs, with only Dier currently playing in a 5.

I think playing a back 5 to protect Maguire means you are playing an not entirely reliable Dier, whilst asking the full backs to become wing backs when none of them are currently playing in that specialist position.

I also think we need to get Foden involved in the middle and we need pace and ability to carry the ball out wide. Therefore my team to start the tournament would be:

.........................Pickford...........................

Trippier......White......Stones.......Shaw

..............................Rice...............................

.............Bellingham..........Foden...........

Saka...................Kane..............Grealish

Although White is playing right back for Arsenal at the moment - and excelling - he is a centre back by trade and presumably he's in the squad as a centre back first and 3rd of 4th choice right back second. You could make a case for playing one of the other CBs, but I think let's see what a player full of confidence can do in the first game.

I'd love to think we can stick to a back 4 throughout the whole tournament, but go from 4-1-2-3 to 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 if we feel the need for more midfield steel in the latter stages against the better teams. That said, the front 5 I have chosen all love the ball, as do the full backs, and I genuinely believe we would dominate possession against most teams with that line up.

I won't blame Southgate for being more pragmatic than me, as it's easy to be brave from the comfort of your own armchair. It would be brilliant however to set up as above and take the game to all opposition, with the likes of Maddison, Rashford, Mount, Wilson and Sterling all available to come on if any of those front 5 are not performing.

And what has he down for his club? Awful over the past year, barley starts for Man U. He is a walking Liability.

Yeah that’s why I used the class is permanent form is temporary line addressing his recent form but it’s nowhere near as bad as people make out, it’s amplified because he’s at united and he cost £80 million and he has football twitter baying for blood every time he plays so if he makes an error, they can post a video of it. The man needs encouragement and someone who believes in him, Southgate is that man and I believe Maguire will not let England down.

When he states he hasn’t picked Abraham because he’s stopped scoring at the wrong time, how can you then defend the selections of Phillips and Maguire

Because Callum Wilson is in better form than Abraham.

Taking Phillips is a risk, but I'm not sure there is another defensive midfielder making a strong case for inclusion at his expense.

Maguire over Guehi or Tomori is a more difficult choice to defend and personally I'd have taken either instead, but I understand why Southgate trusts Maguire.

Phillips really shouldn't be necessary in my opinion. You've got Rice and Henderson who can both play in the sitting role, and at a push Dier could play there.

I'm happy enough with the squad overall but would have loved it if Southgate had have gone for a wild card pick and chosen Harvey Elliot, who is a potential star in the making in my opinion.

Now that the squad has been announced, what team would you go with for the tournament?

I've accepted that Southgate will definitely go with wing-backs if we come up against a decent side, but I'm hopeful he will go with a back 4 for the group games, so here are the two teams I'd go with.

4-3-3

.......................Pickford....................

Trippier....Maguire....Stones.....Shaw

.....Henderson...Rice....Bellingham...

Saka.........................................Foden

..........................Kane........................

5-2-3

.......................Pickford.......................

.........Walker....Maguire....Stones......

Saka........................................Foden

I've just had a look at how Dortmund have been setting up this season and seems they've actually been setting up 4231, with Bellingham as one of the two midfielders.

I think because of this I'd actually be tempted to say that England should set up 4231, with Bellingham and Rice as the two midfielders, and then either Mount or Maddison in the no 10 role.

Could work

Pickford

Trippier
White
Stones
Shaw

Rice
Bellingham

Saka
Maddison
Foden

Kane

Surprised Gallagher got in the squad he’s a good player as we seen at Palace last season but not playing much at the moment.

Thought Jacob Ramsay from Villa had a chance of been a wild card, he’s nailed on for next tournament
