England penalties - yet again

Why leave it to the kids?

The experienced pro's should step up to the mark and be first in line.

Expecially in such a massive game it was a bad decision to leave such a huge responsibility to the young uns

I can't get on board with this opinion. England have been losing penalty shoot-outs with the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney etc. Some of the most 'experienced' English players around.

Take Henderson for example, he is classed as a experienced player but also missed v Colombia at the 2018 WC & also missed a pen in one of the warm up games at the Riverside. If you actually look at Rashford & Sancho's record of scoring penalties it's pretty impressive.

Yes maybe Saka was an odd one (even though Gareth sees them in training every singe day, so you'd trust his judgement) but if you think that picking experienced players guarantees you/gives you a much better chance then unfortunately that's not the case.

Criticised in the past for "not preparing for penalties" plainly we had prepared for them, we had a plan we had selected players who would take the penalties and knew that they are good at it. We engineered our substitutions so that our plan could be put into action. But. You can never recreate the pressure of the walk from the halfway line to the penalty area in the final of a major competition watched by a considerable portion of people on the planet via TV in training. It simply is not possible. But we had prepared, we had a plan we had chosen takers. I don't know what more you can do other than get lucky. If Rashford's penalty goes in...

Mutley is bang on the money above. It is churlish in the extreme to criticize a penalty shoot out loss. It is very difficult to prepare for because you can not recreate the atmosphere. Some people thrive in that cauldron, most do not and nerves and the weight of expectation can easily overcome them. Being critical of sportsmen for being human, well, it just doesn't make any sense, does it?

If you could recreate the penalty shoot out then all shootouts would end up 11-10 or some such as a professional footballer, all things being equal, should score from the spot.

The fact that so few go to sudden death tells you all you need to know.

On that subject we all remember a quarter final, I think, against Liverpool where we ultimately lost but I think it was 10-10 before we missed one.

I couldn't agree more. All you can do is prepare and have a plan. Let's not forget Jorginho missed one of theirs and he's supposedly a specialist.

Both teams missed one of their first 5 pens that night. I think it was our first penalty and Liverpool's fifth. But from that point on.....goodness me.

You have a better memory than I do! It was one of the few penalty shoot outs I really enjoyed, albeit we lost in the end.

It does apply. The experienced players need to dig deep into that experience and use it as an advantage.

The pre-planned list was wrong - we lost.

Was it wrong, I mean we lost but was it wrong at the time? Nobody can say that.

Was Mourinho wrong to put Ronaldo, Ramos and Kaka on the first 3 penalties when they got knocked out of the champions league? They all missed. You couldn’t wish for 3 big players with experience and ability and it still didn’t work out that night.

I don’t think there’s really a wrong or right in most cases. Players miss penalties sometimes, regardless of experience and ability.

Sometimes I think we read far too much into it. Better players with more experience than Saka have hit far worse penalties in shootouts.

It’s so hard isn’t it.

My instinct was like everyone’s, wow, the 19 year old kid taking the 5th penalty. But then... would you really not back your three forwards to score 99 times out of a hundred?

You look around at the other possible penalty takers and maybe the only one who you’d think might have stepped up would be Luke Shaw - he takes free kicks and corners so he’s a good technical player. But then, would you back a left back who’s scored one international goal in his whole career over Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho?

Trippier would have took one if he’d been on. I imagine Hendo would have took one for balls of steel factor, but he’s missed penalties before. I’d have worried about Raheem taking one tbh, he’s not the cleanest striker of a ball all the time and has missed them before. In the end, they will have prepared to death for that list of takers, it’s not the lottery it was 30 years ago.

Hurts like hell that someone has to miss and my heart seriously goes out to them, but can’t say I’d have chosen different penalty takers.

Thought they all scored up to Adomah missing, even Blackman?? keeper scored one for us, cheers for that
Simon Mignolet saved Boro's first penalty from Bamford only for Raheem Sterling to miss Liverpool's fifth and send the shootout to sudden death.

you guys have really good memories. I am impressed. Or did you all google it - wish I had thought of that

Wish I had I wouldn't have got it so wrong, for some reason I thought penalties went in until Adomah & as soon as Rofesleg mentioned Barmby missed his 1st I remembered as he scored one in extra time

Adomah's first was my favourite. High and wide into the net.
