engel

I like the way he looks for passes into Azaz/Hackney/Lath. He puts pace on the passes as well.

Basically as McGree comes short he looks for the next man who is often in space.

I think a lot of our players could look to carry the ball into space more often, but I think that is a victim of the head up way that Carrick likes them to play.

He played well and tbh I think he’s one of those players who worse (in people’s minds) whilst out injured…just like Dael Fry.

Seeing how we’ve used Engel and McGree and Borges and Burgzorg makes me think we don’t need a LB at all. If everyone is fit we’ve got a great tactical tweak right there.

Whilst it wasn’t an outstanding performance by any stretch of the imagination but it was one that filled me with optimism.

We may see the same on the other side with Doak and Ayling and Jones and Dijksteel.

It’s an insult to George Friend to compare them imo. Engel had a pretty good game last night but he is absolutely nowhere near Friend’s level at all.
I'm really struggling to see how his performance was good.
It was as well as I've seen him play, but that is not saying much at all.

I thought he was pretty good, not that it was the most challenging match for him. Took quite a clatter from Glover but I don't think that affected him much.

He can't defend , pass & has no pace. He's that bad the club have ended up bringing in two new left backs.

Not sure who you are watching, the Engel I see likes to get forward and always makes himself available. Even when things are going wrong for him, he doesn’t hide.
No, absolutely no way implying he hides - totally agree he makes himself available and is good at finding space.

My observation was the number of passes he plays square/back to the CBs in his own half, and further up the pitch into the CMs/LM when he could carry it himself or try to draw the opposing player in.

I'm cutting him some slack last night as he is coming back from a fairly long lay off, but if you watch he looks to get rid of the ball as quick as possible.

No criticism, I like Engel.👍

I like Engel and want him to have a future at the Boro

I just want him to defend and he can build on anything more at a later date for me

I thought he was excellent last night. At times, he was up and down that line like a whippet.(y)

He put in a great last ditch tackle at one point during one of their rare counter attacks. The fact that he seem to offer more going forward than Borges really is not a great reflection on Borges.

LB really is a weak position for us. I'm not too impressed with any of our options there. But Engel had a reasonable game.
