Energy bill fatigue

Its every day, or even every hour. Cant switch on the TV / Radio. Its a lot of scare mongering aided by the media.

The bigger the numbers get - what is it now 6000. ? Its a bid to make the real number when it comes a touch of relief.

Government needs to pass a law to outlaw replacing meters with prepaid meters, as that is the threat if you fall in to arrears.
Then follows disconnection, which they can do from a centralised base without even going to the property.
Smart meter ? - no thanks - smart for them not you

How long before people die due to essential medical devices cut off from electricity.

Lest we forget that people will employ 'other means' to get utilities into their home or bypass meters. Both incredibly dangerous to the residents AND their neighbours.

I’m telling you right now this government couldn’t care less - in fact the less non tax payers about (pensioners) the better, in their eyes. Everyone of us is becoming less relevant by the day. Small businesses are going to be destroyed, smaller shops will close, leaving just big business left to monopolise everything. I despair at what the future holds for our kids and grandchildren, that’s if they have a future at all.

There is a lot of scaremongering going on, but remember the fundamentals.

The figures quoted are based upon the average usage.
Therefore try to become lower than average.
I live by my own in a 2 bed coach house, I am at home most of the time, but have found this summer that my energy bills have been negligible.
Gas costs have been very low, due to no heating, minimal cooking and not using much water. I am now in advance of the bills for when it gets colder, but I will be sparing how I heat my home through the winter.
Electricity costs have been lower than usual, but I do use quite a lot of electricity due to computer usage and energy using hobbies. Again I can drop these further if I need to.
I dont pay by DD and submit meter readings each month, equally I will not get a smart meter as I prefer to maintain control of the data that the power companies get.
I understand everyones concerns, but there are things that can be done to manage your usage.

One thing which has worried me slightly is that covid showed us how pretty daft a lot of people can be when scientists and doctors put facts into the public domain.

What if these people start heating their homes with their own homespun methods and fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning or breathing in carcinogens from whatever rubbish they burn on dodgy stoves/burners? Some people might open up old fireplaces without realising the need have flues and chimneys cleared if nothing's been burned for decades.

People will die because the Tories and many who voted for them couldn't care less, as long as their dividend share is up on last year

Ok - we read our meters weekly and our summer electricity usage is typically around £25 per week (Eon next). We are off grid for gas/water and sewerage - our LPG usage (again measured weekly) is around £10 per week (Flogas) and the 3 bed bungalow has heating and hot water provided via a log burner with back boiler which is on 24/7 from October to April - weekly cost £100. My point is, yes sadly, costs will be going up in the short term, but please set up your budgets so you can anticipate whatever is coming. Short term hard times ahead but if you get in control at least you can do something about it. Typical bungalow - 2 of us - 4 freezers, 2 fridges plus cooking on gas - UTB

Not if your outgoings exceed your income !

For many people setting up their budgets the way you describe is impossible. How do you set up your budget if you have less coming in than going out and there’s nothing left to cut back on?

That's all well and good but some people are above average users so the scary numbers are way below real usage.

My house is above average, I work from home, have young children and an electric car. The £4,200 estimate would have me paying £620pm, the £6k figure quoted today would be getting on for £900pm. That was a whole year of energy just a few years ago.

I have a new house so I'm already at the limit of what I can do in terms of insulation. I can't have no heating at all because of the kids and we're already pretty good with our thermostat anyway. I can't reduce usage significantly so I'm going to be paying a mortgage then another mortgage worth on my energy, not to mention all the other increasing costs. And I'm doing better than most people! Something has to give because it is impossible to pay bills that high.

Its the new Covid in the media.

Its appears scaring people sh*tless people gets them attention, which is their objective.

Ignorance isn't always bliss.

What do you think is more scary? Hearing about something in the news repeatedly so you can possibly prepare or suddenly getting a massive hike to your energy bills that you can't afford.

It's the lack of action by Government that is driving the constant media coverage. The Tories are ploughing head first into £6,000k a year average bills and a potential 18% inflation rate due to this AND ARE DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT whilst they argue with each other.

The media are rightly applying as much pressure as possible with this - we should really be thanking them! It should be Truss' no 1 issue when she gets into power.

On the plus side, barristers are going on strike so a good time to top up your income with a bit of robbing!
If you have a look at the state of our law enforcement and judicial systems and how they've been cut back over the last 12 years you would have made that decision a few years back.

We had a drugs drop in the street late yesterday afternoon. Still no sign of the police.
