Emerson - 8 goals in41 appearances for us

Probably the most gifted footballer I've ever seen play for us, at his best the best midfielder in the world, didn't last long but a joy to watch.
We will never see anything as good again
The best midfielder in the world? In the end overated, the potential was there but he never got close to fulfilling it

In terms of pure ability, probably the best we've ever had in my opinion. Just ahead of Boksic and Mendi.

How he applied that ability was questionable at times but an absolute joy to watch.

In terms of actual ability and everything it takes to be a world class CM he had the lot. I say 'world class' because he maybe could have been.

I shudder to think what a player of his ability would be worth today? He wasn't the first and won't be the last to fail to live up to his undoubted talent.

It's safe to say he definitely had the 'wow' factor when he was 'on it'. I joy to watch him.... Just didn't see enough of it😕

He played with cortisone injections in his ankle for much of his career, his first AWOL from us in November trip was in part to find a witch doctor to try and find a cure to the problem from a knock I think he picked up against Arsenal.

Emerson, was badly advised and we as a club were probably too soft with him and pandered to him, all he wanted to do was play football, all those around him wanted to do was make money. At times his wanting to play was to our detriment, much is said of Ravanelli’s decision to start the FA Cup final, but Emerson was equally as immobile and ineffective but stayed on because he had more heart than Ravanelli, in truth neither should have started.

I think drive has something to do with his career as whole - there was hardly a chance he'd ever make it as a regular for the Brazil squad and that may have demoralised him a bit.

Came up very short against Veira, I was so looking forward to Emerson bossing him but it didn’t happen. Up to that game he was immense!
This is exactly how I remember it also. Can still remember that game vs Arsenal at the Riverside. Emerson had looked an absolute world beater in the season so far until then.

He went to tackle Viera during the first half and literally just bounced off him. He looked utterly shocked and was never the same player again after that moment.

Overrated. Best game was a friendly. If he had a short back and sides and had been called Kevin and been from Stourbridge no one would have given him a second thought.

I thought his head was turned at one point by Barcelona. Didn't Bobby Robson decide he wanted him? Or am I imagining it?

Bit like Gazza and Merson (although Gazza was probably a lost cause) probably needed a stronger manager than Robbo. Robson was such a strong individual mentally himself, think he struggled to understand or handle players who weren't.

For all his antics, Emerson clearly didn't hate it here. Didn't he enthusiastically say "I'm staying, I'm staying" at some event following relegation? As you say, think he was just a bit of a naive young lad, badly advised.

Damage had been done and think the hierarchy had had enough which is why he was sold? Too much of a loose cannon, couldn't really be trusted.

So in typical MFC fashion we used the money to go out and buy Gazza instead 😂🤦
