Edmundson recalled

I cannot work out what Ipswich's angle is on this? Trying to play "hard ball" over a fringe player who has already played for two teams this season? Odd. I assume it is Keith Scott who handles this so he waits two weeks and offers then twenty quid and a bag of peanuts or you can have him back. If they decline they have to pay George's wages for the rest of the season as well as missing out on the bag of peanuts. We're not desperate for cover at CB and he's probably third choice behind Dael and Rav with options of Clarke, Ayling, Howson and maybe Lennihan at some point even Dijksteel perhaps.

Unless this is a petty gotcha from the ELL deal I don't see what they win
It will be a who blinks first situation. Do we pursue other deals? or do we bend to Ipswich's way and offer the extra bag of peanuts. All seems a bit petty and lacking class from Ipswich, over what is likely a drop in the ocean financially.

There is some suggestion on the Ipswich forums that he is needed as cover as Woolfenden might be leaving? I imagine it's probably a bit of both - they don't mind having him as cover but would be happy to sell if we offered a bit more.
He might not also mind, yeah he might not play much but this might be his only opportunity to be a PL player.

Maybe they’re thinking he could be part of a deal for Latte Lath? Unlikely I know.

They’ve got Greaves, O’Shea, Godfrey and Burgess, so he’d still be fifth choice.

Not sure they would give him a squad number.

Also the timing was linked to the recall clause, not sure they would have left it late in the window if it’s related to an outgoing that hasn’t happened and might not

I'd be on to Ipswich's PFA representative if I were George. Unless they've got any intention of playing him it's almost restraint of trade.

Isn't it from the 1st Feb?
We can't agree a "bosman" deal with players from the same country until 1 month from contract expiry. Players from abroad can sign pre contract agreements 6 months from expiry. Contracts generally expire on the 30th June, hence TAA can sign for Real, but we couldn't agree a deal with Edmondson.

Would be anarchy having a player with a pre contract agreement playing against his future employers in a domestic game!

I’m honestly shocked at this. You’ve got a premier league club (well for a few more months) playing hardball over a 6 figure fee. It is baffling.

George comes across as a cracking lad and for them to basically put his career on hold until the summer leaves a real poor taste. I feel really sorry for Edmundson

It’s his families future, he’ll be pretty peed off. Ipswich loaned him out in the last year of his contract because their blocking didn’t want him to renew and this got him off the books and with a chance to make a further career for himself. Ipswich have scuppered that for a few quid, that they really shouldn’t need to hard bargain over. Especially as they had already sent him on a year loan to see his contract down
They brought him on the last few minutes at Man City earlier this season as a way of saying thank you and good bye. Now they're treating him like dirt. He's still their player but unless they're going to play him, which I don't think they are, then its a very bad look.

Move on for me, he's come in done a job, is a good character, but I don't think he's great with the ball, he was awful against Blackburn, admittedly he had to play left sided and he struggled massively distributing the ball under any kind of pressure. He'd be 3rd choice right sided behind Fry & RVDB, we need a left sided central defender who is an upgrade on Clarke to make us better, ideally a loan. Lenihan should be back next season, where is he going to fit in? A permanent signing at at right sided CB seems odd to me

Bear with me here. Whenever Jonny Howson has covered at centre back he has looked excellent. Composed, cultured, great anticipation. He may be getting a bit long in the tooth to play defensive midfield for us at the level we need, mobility wise. I reckon he'd be fit and mobile enough to play CB until he is 40 though. So, if he was up for it, rather than buying Edmundson as back-up CB, would it be better to see if he wanted to extend his career with a view to being mainly CB cover, but with the option of being emergency cover in midfield too?

I've said for ages that when howson has played CB he looks like the best CB at the club. If he was just starting his career now he could well have developed into an international CB able to play and carry the ball out but I think his size would have been held against him 20yrs ago.

All good things must come to an end though so I don't think it would be feasible to keep give him a year or two longer as a CB. If he gets back and has a storming end to the season then why not another year but as things stand, probably coaching role here hopefully or somewhere else.

Its not the worst shout, but the fitness records of our 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice centre backs are such that in this scenario Howson would inevitably end up playing 20+ games over a season, so that's quite an ask.

It saddens me to say it but I think we should let Jonny go at the end of the season. He's now struggling to stay fit and given his age it's understandable.

He can’t go on forever. Seems like the type we may try to get in the coaching set up at some level. He’s currently doing his badges.

They've recalled him - if we wait until last day & offer £100k - they'll lose out, we may end up losing out the most, as they'll have all his wages to pay & then get nothing back..

IMHO our offer was a very good one & I'd not be increasing it ( I had extensive experience doing these deals on Football Manager, back in the day.. winky )
