Dwight Gayle move blocked by Gibbo

I can't imagine us paying anyone close to £50k a week at the moment let alone a player who most see as a squad player rather than a first team regular.

Was never a player I really wanted here. Too many injuries and too few goals. I don't even get the feeling that he is a player who WANTS to play that LOVES the game. If we have said no to him my only worry would be the judgement of someone who suggested him.

According to Football Insider, Gibbo doesn't want to sign players over 30 and has blocked any deal to sign Gayle.
Have a feeling his wages had a say to 😂
This was my theory as posted on another thread a few days ago, it sounds about right to me

I think this is the issue. It was reported last season that the mags wanted 100% of his wage picking up.

That's why he sat around as nobody could afford to loan him. That's without a loan fee (probably 1-2mil). It's just dead money.

They ain't daft. They know they have a guy who's sat on 50k a week and won't get a kick. He could quite easily sit on his contract and get every Saturday off. We've had a few like that (Rudy who clubs couldn't afford to loan).

Talks had been ongoing a few weeks ago and it looked like a done deal, however the Boro medical team were concerned at the scans they received from Newcastle of Gayle's knee and tried to negotiate a lower contribution or a more pay as you play deal which Newcastle turned down as other clubs were interested.

The positive side is we are doing due diligence on injuries prior to signing players which was something we were lax on previously, think it was Keith O'Neill who despite suffering from degenerative spondylosis had a medical that involved touching his toes and 2 minutes on a running machine.

Frankly our record of signing strikers - permanent or loan- is little short of abysmal. To turn our noses up for a striker who has a pedigree of scoring goals - albeit not in most recent times - I hope we have a list of goal scoring strikers ready and willing to come. Somehow……

So we should drop £50k a week without thinking about it on someone who is 33 in October and has played about ten games in two years?

I'm fully behind the club being cautious on this. We're not 'turning our noses up', we're (apparently) not committing to possibly £4million plus in wages and a signing on fee on a player who is definitely a risk.

If it was the season after his West Brom escapades and no knee injury you can maybe criticise the clubs (apparent) stance, but not on the Gayle we are talking about signing today.

We all know if we sign him he'll be dog egg and if he goes somewhere else he'll knock 20 in including a brace against us. We should just resign ourselves to that now.

£50 k a week? We wouldn’t pay anything like that - unless you are more informed than the rest of us…..
Exactly 'we wouldn't pay anything like that', you said we were 'turning our noses up' at him, which one is it?

Are we just being financially prudent?

He's rumoured to be on at least £40k a week at Newcastle for another two years, without any goal or appearance bonuses. If they want that covering (or will release him on a free if we take over his contract) there is no way we should go anywhere near him.

With his recent appearance, goal and injury record I'd assume/hope he'd be third choice for us, and is 'worth' about £15k a week of our wage budget for that squad position, all IMHO of course..

Was speaking to a sane Newcastle fan - I know - few weeks back when the rumours first surfaced and he said the only way he will leave is if we match his £50k week wages, or if it's a loan, he said he would seriously question his motivation playing for us. Basically, said don't bother as he's past it and seems happy to pick up his wages.
So no loss IMO 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Gayle will get his 50k a week for the next 2 years. Newcastle are simply trying to find which club, if any, is willing to make the biggest contribution to the money they are contracted to pay. Any deal has to be appealing to Gayle. As he can sit on his **** until he's almost 35 he's likely to be fairly choosy.

MLS maybe?

How do you know we have been?

Fans say Gyökeres, Gayle & one of McGoldrick, Archer, Rhodes, Joao..

It might be Armstrong, Muniz & Henry are our top choices? We've been linked with them in the past..
Problem is we simply haven’t a clue who may come in. Just appears days become weeks - and we don’t appear to be getting anywhere!

I was going to write it's stunning that Gayle is on 50k a week. That's what we have to compete with when someone says 'loan a prem player'

You almost never see many signed on a perm. That's because bang average one's are on 30-50k+

I mean we live in a world where Balogun signed a 4 year deal on 40k a week. He'd scored 1 senior goal before joining us. So you can't even just pluck someone out of an academy. They could easily be on 20k.

I don’t think anyone had a clue about the strikers we’ve signed in recent years. Maybe it will go to the wire? We’ve still got Uche and Akpom on the books. Plus whatever Spence brings in certainly isn’t going to hurt.

Coburn and Watmore aren’t exactly chopped liver and I wouldn’t be adverse to having Crooks further up the pitch. Chuck in one of the academy lads with no fear and we’ll have as good of a strike force as we’ve had.

Plus, Kieran Scott must be impressing Man Utd with something other than Yony Mowbray signings..
