Don’t miss out on the beauty of Albert Park this summer - press release

If you haven’t visited Albert Park recently you’re missing out.

That’s the message from Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston as he reminds people of the park’s beauty.

The park has undergone improvements with the visitor centre upgraded, rowing boats reinstated on the wonderful lake and fish restocked for anglers. Giant board games are also available for families to enjoy.

It attracts hundreds of runners every Saturday for the popular 9am Parkrun and is set to host several family events during the school holidays.

Mayor Preston said: “Albert Park is a glorious place that I sometimes think we take for granted.

“It’s more than 150 years old but is as important now as it was when it first opened.

“We’ve spent a little bit of money making improvements here and there and there’s more work to come.

“There are lots of great events coming up during the school holidays and if you haven’t been for a while I’d urge you not to miss out on this beautiful park.”

Meanwhile, new football goals are set to be introduced to the park which also boasts tennis courts and a bowling green.

The idea for Albert Park was first put forward by the town’s first mayor and MP Henry Bolckow who wanted a ‘green lung’ for the growing industrial town and it was initially described as the ‘people’s park’ in its inception.

It was officially opened in August 1868 by Prince Arthur of Connaught with the park named after his father Prince Albert.
