Tbf that's our fault. We sent the god botherers over there. Maybe we should have sent the pig thieves like we did in Oz?In America in particular, most prevalent amongst the happy clappy evangelical lot, it seems "talking the talk" carries much more weight than your actions or character.
As long as you go around banging on about God every five minutes and promise to try and align laws to daft stuff scribbled down by some bloke from a completely different country and culture thousands of years ago, they won't care how morally bankrupt you are or what "sins" you commit. They'll love you for it.
It's absolutely mental and as you say, makes no sense. It's like they don't understand their own religion. Trump pretty much goes against everything that Jesus fella talks about.
