Does anybody know of any Meetup groups for senior citizens?

Hi Chaps,

Just wondering if any of you guys can point me in the right direction.

My old man had a stroke earlier in the year and was admitted to hospital for three months. During that period my mother sadly passed away and now he is home alone learning to walk again and is very lonely.

Unfortunately I work overseas so i can’t take him out or to a Boro match. So I am trying to find some sort of meet up group where he could meet new friends and maybe find a bit of happiness again.

I’ve looked on line and all I can find is help the aged events and he’s not quite into playing bingo or singing Agadoo so they’re not such a great fit for for him. He’s more a pint of beer, football and whisky type of guy.

Would anybody know of any meet up groups or organisations which could help?

Thanks In advance.

There is a Stroke Group established in Middlesbrough, Teesside Stroke Group They use Middlesbrough Sports Village gym once a week and also have other meetings. Another group was being started in Stockton I believe.
They have people of all ages and all abilities but they are a great community support group.
I will go and find the contact. I often chat to them in the Sports Village.

Here - https://www.facebook.com/teessidestrokeclub

Also Sporting Chance - pre COVID they met every Wednesday morning at a Trinity Methodist church in Whinney Banks - one of the members is over 100 one nearly 100. Youngest are in 60s. They do keep fit and other activities - it clearly works! Am not certain if they are meeting again in person yet.

Try Ageing Better Middlesbrough - if in Middlesbrough - they have links to ever group going including Men's Shed

One other suggestion. My dad had a heart attack and bypass and he started going to take heart classes. They are set up to rehabilitate but my dad went for the next 20 years just for the social aspect.

He went to the one in coulby.

As I say he loved it.

Best of luck.

My mum has just joined a meet up coffee group in Guisborough and she says it’s great, with a real mixture of personalities too. She really looks forward to: it’s run by Age UK and is on Wednesday mornings in Morrison’s cafe.

You don't say where he is based but

u3a has groups all over UK with a wide variety of interests, there's definitely a Middlesbrough one https://u3asites.org.uk/middlesbrough/groups he can try different groups without commitment

I found walks for health a good way to meet ppl, govt stopped their funding but many groups have carried on informally so worth contacting them https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder/north-east/healthy-stepping-middlesbrough

Plenty of Middlesbrough FB groups

Any adult education courses he might be interested in? https://www.mbro.ac.uk/adult-and-community-learning

As someone else has already said, I don't have any advice to offer you.

But, I just wanted to say you're a great son for looking out for your Dad and I hope some of the pointers given above are of use to you/ him.

I am getting quite excited at getting old enough to attend all these functions. Who knew there was so much about for older folks.

Hi chaps,

Apologies for the delayed response but i've had a manic few days.

Going off topic slightly, there has always been one thing that has made me feel immensely proud to be from Middlesbrough and that is the local people. Regardless of who you are, where you are, your age, your gender, race or political beliefs - you'll always be part of the Middlesbrough family. Never have i known of such a close bond between strangers from any other area part of the country (or world for that matter) - so thanks so much for all of your responses. To me these are more than just responses on a message board - these are tips that could make someones life so much more happier and worth living again.

I am going to review each and every one with him and see what his thoughts are - the only limitations are that he can only walk as far as his front garden so it needs to be somewhere that can be easily accessible by taxi (he's in Linthorpe)

I'll update you at a later time with his progress

Again, thanks so much for all the info - i would never have found this without fmttm

Now.... back to talking parmos, covid, politics and sub-standard football :)
